‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Play Expected to Return by 2022

The two-part play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is among a handful of shows that aren’t expected to return to Broadway until 2022. The play first premiered on 30 July 2016, opening on Broadway on 21 April 2018 at the Lyric Theatre.

According to The New York Times, the play will open way later than other Broadway performances, which are supposed to resume from September 14, 2021.

The production team behind this play is reportedly reconsidering the show’s length and structure before it can schedule the time, and analyze the process of its reopening.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the enthralling two-part play, is commoditized as the eighth story in the legendary Harry Potter Series. It is written by Jack Thorne and is based on an original story by J. K. Rowling, Thorne, and John Tiffany.

It stars Anthony Boyle, Jamie Parker, Alex Price, Paul Thornley, Sam Clemmett, Noma Dumezweni, and Poppy Miller.

The story is set nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It follows the lives of Harry Potter and his son Albus, who is to attend Hogwarts soon. Harry has now become the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.

The play received an ardent censorious reception. The London production won a record-breaking nine awards, out of eleven nominations at Laurence Olivier Awards in 2017. The Broadway production grabbed six Tony awards too, in 2018, including the title for Best Play.

Because of the COVID outbreak, the play suffered significant losses. And after the reopening, the Broadway League possibly wants to screen fewer shows than usual. This would mean a cut in the pay of cast and crew.

Thus, they will only oblige if theatre owners get the same percentage cut in rent. The actors will compromise only if the play is cut shorter than the usual running time.

The play currently runs over two parts, of duration 2 hrs 40 mins and 2 hrs 35 mins. So, the first priority would be to crop some storylines and skip some scenes.

Diehard Harry Potter fans are already skeptical about altering the series plots.

So, the mammoth task here is to adhere to the audience’s expectations as well as to recover the monetary losses incurred during the pandemic era.
