If you have watched Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert sci-fi novel, you probably must’ve thought that the sequel getting greenlit would be a no-brainer, because the film is just that brilliant.

However, not all good films get the hype they deserve, and sometimes even masterworks flop at the box office. This wasn’t the case for Dune though.

Dune: Part One opened on October 22 in the U.S., earning $41M in ticket sales in its first weekend, making it the best film opening of the year for Warner Bros., and this despite the title getting a simultaneous HBO Max release. The film has so far earned nearly $225M globally.

So, the decision was up to Legendary Entertainment as the company is the primary studio behind it, with Warner Bros. serving as distributors and helping finance it. Legendary made the announcement via a tweet.

Villeneuve said in a statement,

I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune, and I have the fans, the cast and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.

Legendary announcement:

Villeneuve had always envisioned telling the story in two parts. In an interview with Variety at the Toronto Film Festival, the director had said,

I wanted at the beginning to do the two parts simultaneously. For several reasons, it didn’t happen, and I agreed to the challenge of making part one and then wait to see if the movie rings enough enthusiasm… As I was doing the first part, I really put all my passion into it, in case it would be the only one. But I’m optimistic.

Not only that, but Villeneuve is optimistic about making the saga into a trilogy, with the third film telling the story of the second book, titled Dune Messiah.

Dune: Part One stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jason Momoa, Chang Chen, and Javier Bardem, among others.

Many characters bit the dust in the first film, which only covers the first half of the novel. Some characters whose fates were left uncertain might return but no casting details about the sequel have been announced yet.

Dune: Part Two is scheduled to hit theaters on October 20, 2023. But before then, the prequel series about the Bene Gesserit, Dune: The Sisterhood, will make its debut on HBO Max sometime in late 2022.
