James Cameron has a hilarious response when asked about the perfect time to take a bathroom break during Avatar: The Way of Water’s 3 hours running time. Avatar: The Way of Water will release in theaters on December 16, 2022.
The much-awaited sequel to the 2009 film, Avatar, is written and directed by James Cameron. The final duration of The Way of Water stands at 3 hours 12 minutes, which is half an hour more than the running time of Avatar.
Cameron became quite defensive when criticized about such a long running time, pointing out that people do not mind when they binge-watch shows for that long. But in the case of shows, the audience has the liberty to pause and take a lavatory break whenever required.
But that’s not the case in the theaters. So, if you’re planning to watch a 3-hour-long film in theaters, you’ve to make an informed decision about when to take the bathroom break! Interestingly, The Way of Water’s director has some advice for his audience in this regard.
In an interview with THR, Cameron was asked about the best time to take a bathroom break during The Way of Water’s 3 hours long runtime. The director responded wittily, saying that his audience can take their bathroom break any time they wish to as they can catch the film a second time to watch any scene they may have missed.
“Any time they want. They can see the scene they missed when they come see it again.”

The Way of Water’s lengthy runtime has been a matter of speculation for a long time. The film beats the 3 hours 2 minutes runtime of Avengers: Endgame and the 2 hours 56 minutes runtime of The Batman.
However, James Cameron’s massive hit, Titanic beats The Way of Water by a very small margin, standing at a runtime of 3 hours and 14 minutes. Cameron may have utilized the lengthy runtime of The Way of Water to correct the mistakes he made in the previous installment.
Though the first Avatar film was praised for its stunning cinematography and visual effects, it was criticized for its storytelling and character development. Cameron himself agreed with these shortcomings. Perhaps, he took a longer time to tell the story in The Way of Water to establish the emotional nuances and character depth in the story.
The Way of Water’s success will be largely dependent on the repeat audience and Cameron recognizes this. The film was made at a budget of $350-$400 million, so it has to by default become the third or fourth highest-grossing film in the history of Hollywood to recover its costs.
The sequel is anticipated to open at $135 million, which is double the opening of the first film. However, it has to remain in theaters for several other successive weekends to recover its costs. The holiday season, followed by New Year’s Day will also help the film recover its costs.
