The Wheel of Time Episode five was a fierce, in-your-face hour. In the emotional rollercoaster ride, one moment everyone seems to focus on (and ask more questions about) is a little sneak peek of Perrin’s (Marcus Rutherford) connection with the wolves.
The latest episode also hints at narrowing down the true Dragon Reborn from the five potential candidates that Moiraine picked.
We have already seen Egwene channeling her powers before, like when she created a fire to warm them on a cold night in Episode 4. But Episode 5 offers a first look at how Perrin connects to the One power. This happens when the duo is held captive by the sworn enemies of the Aes Sedai, the White Cloaks.
Egwene and Perrin are faced with an impossible Questioner, aka Child Valda, who has mistaken Egwene for an Aes Sedai and Perrin for her Warder. He is only suspicious of Egwene channeling the One power but he is going to be proven wrong soon.
The Questioner is bloodthirsty. He lays the ground rules: one will be killed and one set free. If Egwene can demonstrate her powers, he will kill her and set Perrin free. Or, he kills Perrin and she can walk free.
To ensure that Egwene channels the One power, he gets Egwene a good wash up to calm her nerves and make it easier to channel it. Perrin, on the other hand, is brought in the same rags and tied up for torture. The Questioner then carves his knife into Perrin’s bare back to instigate Egwene into channeling her powers to save him.
But with every slicing of Perrin’s muscles, we see his eyes turning yellowish-brown and a faint growl rising in the background.
It is obvious the episode is focused on Perrin’s introduction as a channeler. When left alone in the white tent, Perrin confesses to Egwene how he accidentally killed his wife Laila. He pleads with Egwene to let him die at the hands of the White Cloaks because he deserves it.
But Egwene disagrees (“It’s not your fault!”) and convinces him out of his self-hatred. She decides to channel the power and get killed. But just then Perrin lets out a roaring growl, channels the One power himself, and breaks out of the ties. The Questioner is clearly not expecting what he sees (“What are you?”) and before he realizes it, Egwene has stuck his own knife down his neck.
Outside the tent, the wolves have laid siege to the White Cloaks’ camp.
As it turns out, Egwene was right when she said in Episode 4 about the wolves showing them the way. What’s more, they even attacked the people who kept their wolf brother Perrin captive.
We were not aware of Perrin’s hidden connection with the wolves because he was unaware of it himself. Turns out, he can even communicate with and control the wolves as a wolfbrother.
Non-book readers who have turned fans are left to question if Perrin can shapeshift into a werewolf.
Some fans also believe that as a potential wolfbrother, if Perrin was allowed to reach his peak, he would have shapeshifted. But he snapped out of when Egwene stabbed Valda.
Then, there is the question of how Egwene reacts to her friend being a wolfbrother. How is she so calm? What does she know about the wolves that even Perrin doesn’t?
Here’s hoping the coming episodes will shed more light on how Perrin became a wolfbrother, a rare creature with superior power.
The Wheel of Time Episode 6 will be released on December 10, 2021.
