Valheim, the co-op Viking survival game, has been all the rage, with its first week of early access seeing over 1,00,000 concurrent players pushing it onto the top 10 list on Steam.
As players carve out an existence for themselves in the Nordic wilds by hunting, fishing and building, they’re also making new discoveries on what awaits them in the massive map of Valheim. One of the most intriguing mysteries players have come across is that of a shadowy figure staring at them from a distance.
The figure is dressed in a black hooded robe, holding what seems to be a staff. It has been spotted in the Swamp biome adding to the spookiness and vanishes anytime it is approached or attacked.
As the Internet does, theories began to form immediately. One player postulated that it could be the Grim Reaper holding a scythe, while others feel that it could be a wraith – a spectral enemy in Valheim which also spawns in the Swamp biome.
The most popular theory is that it’s Thor’s dad Odin, the Allfather. In Norse mythology Odin is often described as being outfitted in a large hooded robe or cloak, holding a cane or spear. He uses this disguise in a way to spy on beings who intrigue him.
Seeing as the players in Valheim are the souls of slain Vikings locked in purgatory to summon and defeat The Forsaken, Odin’s powerful enemies, it makes sense that Odin would keep tabs on what’s going on.
Many players have stated they have noticed that the hooded figure has just one glowing eye (Odin sacrificed one of his eyes in return for cosmic knowledge), further drawing similarities between the two entities.
But, these are all just theories and rumours. Players are going to have to wait to find out who their stalker is, but as of yet, it doesn’t seem to pose a threat. So continue farming, hunting and going on your adventures. All will be revealed soon.
