Vin Diesel, the star and producer of the Fast & Furious franchise, has confirmed the development of several spinoff projects that will extend the narrative of the series beyond the original saga.
The franchise, which started in 2001 as a distinctive action-crime thriller with an emphasis on street racing, has evolved into one of the most lucrative media properties. The original saga’s 10th installment, Fast X, recently debuted with a strong global box office performance of approximately $320 million, demonstrating the franchise’s sustained financial appeal.
In an interview with Variety at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party, Diesel disclosed that he has been involved in several Fast & Furious spinoff projects. Some of them have been under development for more than 5 years. Diesel’s full statement is as follows:
I started developing the female spinoff…in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs. ]
The Fast & Furious franchise has a plethora of potential spinoffs, such as a Tokyo Drift-inspired film featuring Han Lue (Sung Kang) or a prequel exploring Jakob Toretto’s (John Cena) past as an agent of Mr. Nobody.
The franchise has already proven its spinoff viability with Hobbs & Shaw, which ranked fifth in domestic earnings among all the films in the series. With Dwayne Johnson’s unexpected comeback in Fast X and Jason Statham’s consistent popularity as an action star, another Hobbs & Shaw sequel could be on the horizon.
The most feasible spinoff at the moment is the female-centric film that has Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet attached as screenwriters. Although Michelle Rodriguez has shown reluctance towards any spinoffs, the debut of Queenie’s (Helen Mirren) female squad in Fast X opens up many opportunities.
There is also a compelling roster of female characters, such as Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Tess (Brie Larson), that the writers can utilize. If Cipher (Charlize Theron) makes it out of the main saga alive, a redemption story similar to Deckard Shaw’s could be intriguing as well.
Although Diesel is already developing several new spinoffs, those will probably have to wait until the original saga is concluded, which might take more time than anticipated.
While Fast X was initially intended to be the first of a two-part finale, Diesel suggested Fast & Furious 12 could be in the pipeline, extending the original two-part finale into three parts.
With two more main films apparently now on the agenda and multiple spinoffs in progress, it seems like audiences will have plenty of options to satisfy their appetite for more classic Fast & Furious antics in the near future.
