In October 2022, Henry Cavill announced that he would be stepping down from The Witcher after Season 3. The news shocked fans to no end, but some made peace with the bargain that he would be returning as the Man of Steel soon.
Two months later, another baffling news hit the industry—Warner Discovery’s recent merger has led to a reevaluation of DC projects, ultimately axing Cavill’s version of Superman from the universe.
Without his two big-title projects, Superman and The Witcher, what’s in store for Henry Cavill now?
Henry Cavill is signed on for film projects such as Argylle, The Rosie Project, and The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, all of which are slated for release in 2023-24. He’s also been announced as a part of Warhammer and the Highlander reboots.
If you’re a big Cavill fan like me, the recent news may have been quite saddening to you. But don’t worry, he’s not going anyway from your screens, and there are plenty of future Henry Cavill projects to look forward to:
1 Argylle (2023)
Cavill does have a few movies lined up that are already being filmed or are already in post-production—Argylle being one of them.
Based on Elly Conway’s to-be-released novel, Cavill will play an ace spy suffering from amnesia. The story will turn into a revengeful one once he recovers his memories and goes on a hunt for The Division, who was responsible for his condition.
Big names are attached to this film—Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Dua Lipa. It is set to release sometime in 2023.
2 Warhammer (TBA)
After Superman and The Witcher, Warhammer could be Cavill’s next big franchise role. His love for video games is widely known, so it was no surprise when he signed on for Warhammer.
However, Amazon hasn’t locked down the rights-related deal with the video game itself and is still on the lookout for directors, writers, etc. So while this may ultimately be Cavill’s next big project, it may still take some time.
3 The Rosie Project (TBA)
For all of you waiting to see Cavill in a romcom, here’s your opportunity! The Rosie Project is about an unlucky-in-love professor who devises an elaborate questionnaire to find “The One.” He then gets wooed by a woman who’s not at all compatible with him. But love will find a way, eh?
Although filming was reported to have begun in 2022, there is no update on its release date yet.
4 The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare (TBA)
Cavill has also been announced as part of the cast of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, adapted from Damien Lewis’ novel of the same name. It’s being directed by Guy Ritchie, who also worked with Cavill on The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
This film has a similar tone, as it’s about a highly skilled team of soldiers recruited by the British military to strike against Nazi forces during World War II. The title’s “ungentlemanly” refers to their unsavory fighting techniques.
The film does not have a release date yet.
5 Highlander Reboot (TBA)
In 2021, it was announced that Cavill would be part of the Highlander reboot. However, there have been no additional statements about Cavill, and the production for the reboot itself has been stuck in limbo as well.
However, if Highlander does finally go into production, it could be another big franchise for Cavill to dip his toes into.
6 Enola Holmes 3 (TBA)
If Enola Holmes 3 is greenlit, Cavill will surely return to the role of Sherlock Holmes. He might have an equal stake in the film as he did in Enola Holmes 2, especially because the film has also introduced the character of Dr. John Watson now.
Some even believe that Cavill’s Sherlock and Himesh Patel’s Watson may get a spinoff of their own. But only time will tell!
Will Henry Cavill be the next Bond?
When Cavill left The Witcher, some speculated it could’ve been to focus on Superman. Now that the Superman project has been dropped as well, ardent fans are hoping he could be considered for the role of 007 himself.
Fun fact: Cavill was actually one of the final candidates for 2006’s Casino Royale.
However, no official decision has been made about the role since the announcement of Daniel Craig’s exit. Here’s to hoping we hear Cavill say, “The name’s Bond, James Bond!”
