Avatar 2 will be out in just a few months and everyone is itching to know what exactly the sequel will be about. The title has more than hinted about exploring Pandora’s sea world to introduce a new Na’vi clan, and if the movie’s underwater CGI is anything to go by, Avatar 2 is going to create a splash!
In Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake and the rest of the Omaticaya clan will face the reemerging threat of humans, led by Colonel Miles Quaritch. They shall seek help from their fellow Na’vi clan, the Metkayinas, with whom they have strained relations.
It’s time to explore the plot in more detail.
Plot of Avatar: The Way of Water
The official synopses for Avatar 2 has been released, but it only sheds light on a few basic points of the plot:
Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet.
Avatar: The Way of Water’s Official Synopsis
It is expected that we will get a recap of Jake and Neytiri’s (domestic) life thus far, introducing their kids, their participation in the Omaticaya clan, and Neytiri’s preparations for becoming a Tsahìk. However, their peaceful lives will be upturned by a threat endangering the rainforests.
This will cause the clan to seek aid from the oceanic Na’vi clan called Metkayina, who are a new and interesting aspect of Avatar 2.
Who is the antagonist of Avatar 2?
Avatar 2 seems to be teasing a double-threat kind of situation, with one conflict between the Omaticaya clan and the Metkayina clan, and the second one between the Na’vi and humans led by the first movie’s antagonist, Colonel Miles Quartich.
However, I’m willing to bet on humans being the main antagonists once again.
We’re yet to understand why the two clans clash. It could be that the Metkayinas had disapproved of the Omaticayas working with the humans and now blame them for bringing such adversaries to their planet. Or it could be a whole other historical conflict that would be explained in the movies.
As for the war with the humans, that doesn’t take much explaining. The humans may want to get back to their space colonization and have a second try at controlling Pandora and its resources. Plus, Colonel Miles Quaritch is returning in a new avatar and that can never be good news.
As we’re literally moving to a new landscape, and we have to explore the flora and fauna that comes with it. One important question here is, like the great leonopteryx and fanged mongrel, will we get any sea creature that the Na’vi will bond with?
There will be plenty of new creatures to marvel at, but we’re yet unsure which ones can form a Tsaheylu (bond) with the Na’vi. Still, the two most important sea creatures to be featured in Avatar 2 are the tulkun and the ilu.
The tulkun is similar to a whale and shows off the mere vastness of Pandora’s reef habitat. Measuring 300 meters in length, they’re known to be powerful, sentient creatures. In the film’s teaser, this creature was also seen marching into battle side by side with the Na’vi.
The ilu, on the other hand, is inspired by the direhorse. You may also recognize the playful creatures from the Flight of Passage ride at Walt Disney World. We’re yet to learn what role they will play in the movie.
