The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 4 Recap:

In the fourth episode, Elrond and Galadriel prepare to travel to Eregion. Galadriel is upset about Elrond taking over her leadership, but she agrees to help with the army logistics when Elrond tells her that Gil-galad has ordered him to name her as his second-in-command.

As they leave Lindon for Eregion, they find that Sauron’s work has destroyed the bridge that spans a chasm. Camnir suggests two alternative routes, but Galadriel warns them of a danger in the hills.

Galadriel objects to Elrond’s plan, believing it to be a ploy. Elrond insists they take the southern route to Eregion, warning Galadriel that he will return her to Lindon if she listens to the ring. Despite his threat, she refuses to comply as they leave.

Nori and Poppy awaken in the desert and encounter Nobody, also known as Merimac. They persuade him to take them to his village, where they meet Gund, the village leader.

The village is built into a bowl-shaped crevice in the stone walls, which bothers the Harfoots. The Gund, also known as Gundabale, corrects us by saying they are Stoors, not Harfoots or Hobbits. She is upset with Merimac for bringing them but allows the two Harfoots to explain their presence. Nori said they went on a mission to help a giant friend discover his destiny.

Until Nori reveals the Stranger is a wizard, not many alarm bells go up because the giant is relative when you’re as small as they are. Sadly, Ciaran Hinds, aka the Dark Wizard, is the only wizard in this area. He is the one with the Saruman beard. Gundabale only needs to hear that to give the order to bind the girls.

The hermit farmer, previously known as Tom Bombadil, is the only one who manages to locate the Istar by convincing his tree to release it. In The Lord of the Rings, the character appears early on Frodo’s journey but is missing from the Peter Jackson film series. Kinnear’s portrayal brings a lighthearted touch of humor to the production.

Tom asks the Stranger about the stars. The Stranger expresses his hope to find friends beneath the stars. Tom then magically turns the Stranger’s star sketch into a piece of bread, joking that he might be the person the Stranger was looking for beneath the stars.

The Stranger also asks Tom Bombadil to teach him, having seen his casual power over nature. Tom responds that the Stranger can only learn when he is ready, and he isn’t ready yet.

The sounds of distant horses signal the end of their conversation and the Stranger’s realization that Tom is the person he was meant to meet. Tom says that he was acquainted with the Dark Wizard long before he conquered Rhûn and that his current goal is to work with Sauron to continue gaining power, which he claims will destroy Middle-earth.

While traveling to Eregion, the group arrives at Tyrn Gorthad, an ancient burial site. Elrond and Vorohil hear a whispered song and discover a message for Celebrimbor and Gil-galad’s messengers. Shortly after, the Barrow-wights, ghostly beings that haunt the cemetery, reveal themselves and drag Daemor to his demise. It was not a good idea to travel through Tyrn Gorthad.

The search for Theo is underway near Pelargir. He was abducted after sneaking into the wildmen’s camp with Isildur. Despite Theo’s refusal to talk to Arondir and his report of Bronwyn’s death, Arondir joins the search. He notices that the abandoned camp suggests something significant has happened.

As they continue their search, Arondir reassures Isildur that Theo has fared better because he can see that the Numenorian is punishing himself for what transpired. When Arondir investigates after hearing a noise in the distance, all he discovers is the decapitated and crushed body of one of their own.

Gundabale told Nori and Poppy that the village elders would cast them out at first light. They accepted it well and mentioned they would have done the same if Sadoc had been in charge.

Gundabale was surprised to hear the name Sadoc Burrows. She then showed Nori an old mural and shared a Stoor legend about one of their dreaming of a place similar to Hobbiton. She explained that Rorimas Burrows ventured to find this place and left a note for the others to join, but they never did.

Nori tells Gundabale that Rorimas couldn’t find the location he was searching for, and the Harfoots continued to roam. The Dark Wizard’s scouts bring trouble for Nori and Poppy. When Gundabale denies seeing any Harfoots, the scouts leave quickly, but it’s likely not the last they’ll see of them.

Galadriel is terrified by a vision and makes Elrond swear to slay Sauron above all else. Despite concerns about the ring’s influence, Elrond keeps his word. The Elves hear drums and spot Orcs approaching Eregion, likely the same ones Arondir is chasing. The Orcs discover their location when they accidentally injure Camnir while trying to kill a horse for dinner.

Galadriel surprises everyone by healing Elrond’s wound and stays behind to confront the orcs alone. She entrusts her ring to Elrond before doing so. Despite Elrond’s cynical thoughts, the rest of the company is touched by her selfless act.
