Marvel’s Eternals is on its way to create a big bang in the MCU in just a month. One of the major questions that still has fans confused is when is Eternals set in the Marvel timeline?
With multiple universes and difficult-to-count movies (and characters), Eternals’ timeline sets up the pathway for MCU’s Phase 4. In January 2020, ComicBook visited Chloe Zhao’s Eternals set and learned about the timeline from producer Nate Moore.
The Eternals trailer indicates its set after Avengers: Endgame – when Tony Stark sacrificed himself to turn back time and bring half the population back. It looked like Stark’s sacrifice was for nothing as now, a bigger threat – the Deviants – awaited humanity.
But, he said that it doesn’t directly affect the Eternals timeline. It goes back and forth.
The events of Avengers: Endgame] don’t directly affect [Eternals], although the Eternals are quite aware of what happened in the Endgame and what happened with Thanos, and you sort of get to hear their opinion about what happened and why maybe they didn’t get involved. So it is both in a post-Endgame world, but isn’t a direct line, as far as storytelling
To make it less confusing, Moore also revealed that 60% of the movie is set in the post-Endgame, present era, and 40% will talk about the various peaks of Eternals in history.
Then there’s another question – Do Eternals then also occur in the same timeline as in Spider-Man: Far From Home? (We do see Peter grow up without his father/mentor Tony).
The answer to this is both a yes and a no. Moore mentioned that it “could be concurrent” to Far From Home.
He said that they “operate on a different system.” But he did say that “years have not passed.”
It could be concurrent [to Spider-Man: Far From Home]. Again, they sort of operate on a different system. Although, Far From Home does take place in London, ironically. So it’s sort of an undefined time. I don’t think it’s, years have not passed, I will say that.
With the vague hints Moore revealed back in 2020, it looks like nothing’s certain till fans actually watch the movie after its release.
Eternals will be released on November 5, 2021.
