Ouch! RDJ Claims Putting on the Iron Man Suit Was “A Pain in the Ass

There’s no debate – Robert Downey Jr. portrayed the best cinematic adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Man, and there will never be a Tony Stark like him. The famous role is what alighted Downey’s career in Hollywood, and he dedicated more than a decade to bring the character to life. The actor professionally handled the cons of being Iron Man for the fans!

Not that there were a lot, but the biggest, according to Downey, was the Iron Man suit. The Doctor Dolittle actor has previously touched upon the uncomfortable suit at the beginning of his role. He has repeatedly explained how the mask would render him blind, and he even found it hard to breathe in it.

Calling it “a pain in the ass,” the MCU actor detailed how the helmet was “really hard” and “really hot,” but in the end, the result was “so worth it.” Read his complete statement on the My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman below:

[Quote] Initially, everything was really there. They wanted to spend as little as they could on CG replacement, so I remember this helmet went on, and there’d be a shot, and I’d be in this whole suit, and they’d say, ‘All right, Robert, it’s like you landed on the roof, so when we say action, just go like that, like you just landed, and then start moving forward.’

So I put this helmet on, and it slammed closed, and I couldn’t see anything, and then these LED lights went on, and it was like The Manchurian Candidate. I was absolutely blinded. The helmet was really hard, it’s really hot, you can’t breathe, and it was just a pain in the ass but, you know, so worth it.

Marvel Studios often cut costs in the costume department in the earlier days of the MCU. But Downey explained that as the character’s involvement went on, the suit did get better. He stated the first suit was “sort of like a prototype,” and they kept tinkering with it till the third one, where they finally “had it down.”

The first suit, it was sort of like a prototype, and then we started to get the look of it, and then by the third one, we really had it down. We had some issues with the first one. It was hard to breathe. And then they’re like, ‘We’re going to paint it black inside,’ and I was like, ‘Well, then I’m going to need a stunt double for the scenes where I have to run because I’m going to pass out.

Despite the continued discomfort the suit caused him, RDJ stuck to wearing it to appease the higher-ups at Marvel Studios and ensure that the fandom got the best iteration of the beloved character.

Though his Iron Man days are behind him, as he has confirmed himself, he does tell anyone who asks him about taking the mantle up again that “never say never.” What do you think – will he ever let us see him in the red and gold suit for old times’ sake? Tell us about your views in the comments!
