According to actor Matt Smith, Daemon Targaryen is going to be a ‘very dark and disturbed character’ to portray in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.
Smith appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to chat about the upcoming HBO series. When host Josh Horowitz asked the Doctor Who actor what drew him towards the role, he answered,
It’s an interesting and dark and disturbed part to play, I think. And I thought, ‘Oh, you know, it would be interesting to try on a blonde wig,’ and all that. And, you know, flying some dragons and getting involved in some sword fights.
Matt Smith
Of course, the character’s going to be a disturbed one. The man literally marries his own niece! But, I guess, there are much more disturbing things than incest in the George R. R. Martin lore.
However, it’s not just Daemon who’s going to be scary and dark. If Smith’s description is accurate, Daemon’s dragon’s personality matches its rider.
Caraxes is pretty good, y’know? He’s big and red and angry. He’s a really angry dragon. Mine’s the angriest of all the dragons. There is no angrier dragon than Caraxes. He’s a real moody bastard.
Matt Smith
After all, the eleventh Doctor did trade the TARDIS for a dragon. And if you’re going to have a pet dragon in the world of Game of Thrones, it’s always better to have an angry one, right?
Smith jokingly compared Caraxes with his pet dog, calling him a dragon “with a personality.” Caraxes, also known as the Blood Wyrm, first belonged to Aemon Targaryen. Daemon became Caraxes’ rider after Aemon’s death.
The actor also added that it would be almost impossible for the show to top Game of Thrones as it is a “cultural phenomenon.”
It’s impossible for this show to ever really succeed in the way that Thrones did. Thrones became a sort of cultural phenomenon for many people, and it’s never gonna quite scale those heights in the same way cause that was its own unique thing. Whether people are ready to receive or not, who knows? You never know. But we make it in earnest, and we try to deliver something that is an entertaining world, with dragons and sword fights.
Matt Smith
Considering the fact that fans even started a petition to change the ending because they were so upset with it, it really was quite a phenomenon.
HBO Max dropped the official teaser for the prequel series a few weeks ago, and it had a lot of promising, book-accurate designs.
House of the Dragon is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
