Tom Cruise Might Become the First Civilian to Do a Space Walk!

Tom Cruise has been working his way to becoming the most daring actor on the planet. One might even say that more than his acting, fans look forward to all the different stunts he undertakes in his film projects.

Well, it seems like he doesn’t want to keep his feats simply Earth-bound. So what’s his next impossible mission going to be?

Tom Cruise has proposed a film that involves shooting scenes in outer space, which would make him the first civilian to perform a spacewalk. As of yet, the film is untitled, but both NASA and Space X have expressed an interest in collaborating with it.

It was about time that Cruise shifted his vision skywards, especially after the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick. However, you’ll be surprised to know that the actor came up with the idea long before Top Gun 2 was released.

In an interview with BBC, Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Film Entertainment Group, revealed that during the pandemic, Cruise was ideating a film that would have scenes filmed in space. Cruise had already contacted director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Jumper) to lead the project.

As of October 2022, the film is yet untitled, and no official details have been released. It is even unknown how much of the pre-filming process has begun. But Langley gives us the basic skeleton of the story—a majority of the film will take place on Earth, with Cruise’s character having to save the day by flying off to space.

Of course, even these details are subject to change once the ball gets rolling!

Another big development for this project is that both NASA and Space X have expressed interest in being on board. Notably, their collaboration is of utmost importance since Cruise wants to film the scene in and around the International Space Station.

Jim Bridenstine, who was NASA’s director in 2020, confirmed the same that year itself.

Space X’s involvement, on the other hand, would be through their Space Entertainment Enterprise partnership with Axiom Space. Both companies have planned to create SEE-1, a content, entertainment studio, and multi-purpose space station module.

SEE-1 is scheduled to launch in 2024, and it is where Cruise’s filming might take place. If all goes well, the film’s Earth scenes could be shot in 2023 with the space scenes being finished off in 2024, once the space station is launched.
