The new Halo series got off to a decent start. With incredible production and cinematic quality, I am just waiting to see if the story matches the epic visuals.
If you’re someone who hasn’t played the games and is new to the universe, this article is for you.
But, on the flip side, if you’ve played the games and are wondering what storyline the creators have adapted into the series, you’ve come to the right place, too.
In this post, I’ll be talking about the premise of the original Halo game series and the plot of the Halo TV series. I’ll be discussing the similarities and differences and catching you up with what’s happened in the show so far.
The Halo series takes place in a Silver Timeline, different from the original game franchise’s timeline. Although the premise and major parts of the show are the same as the source material, there are a few significant differences.
Plot of the Halo Game Series
In the games, there were the Precursors and the Forerunners at the very beginning. This was millions of years before the UNSC, the Covenant, and the Spartans existed.
The Precursors were the almighty who created life and gave the Forerunners the ‘mantle of responsibility.’ However, the Precursors then wanted to shift the mantle to ancient humans. This caused an all-out war between the two higher beings.
The Forerunners managed to eradicate the Precursors save a few, who existed as sentient molecular dust.
This dust was cursed and filled with vengeance since the Forerunners had disobeyed them. As a result, this dust spread amongst humans and animals as a plague known as the Flood.
The Forerunners countered this by creating the sacred Halo rings, which destroyed the Flood, and life was able to thrive not just on Earth but across galaxies in the whole universe. Now, thousands of years after this is when the game actually begins.
In the current timeline, there are three main groups:
- The UNSC controls the entire galaxy and acts as the government. However, it has its own shades of grey and is trying to silence the rebel planets who want freedom from them.
- The Covenant is the life of aliens who want to eradicate humanity and establish their dominance over the entire universe. They are fighting the UNSC too.
- The Spartans is a group of super-soldiers led by Master Chief, the game’s main character. These super soldiers fall under the rule of the UNSC and are helping humanity by fighting against the Covenant.
Both the Covenant and the UNSC are looking for the Halo rings.
The Covenant has attached religious significance to the rings because they believe that the creators of the Halo rings are their gods. These gods will help them wipe off humanity from the universe.
What happens when Master Chief encounters one of the artifacts that leads him to the Halo ring is the game’s story. While this is merely the first game’s premise, the story and the various characters evolve, and their arcs progress over the series.
Plot of the Halo TV Series
Now that you know the premise of the game series, let’s look at the TV series.
So far, the show has stuck to the premise mentioned in the above section. However, there are a few significant differences we see in the show. The most prominent ones are:
- The show takes place in an alternate timeline known as the Silver Timeline.
- The UNSC or humanity doesn’t seem to be aware of the sacred Halo rings.
- In the games, any human could activate the artifact and unleash the sacred rings. However, in the show, only the Blessed Ones can do so.
- Cortana, the AI, is more than just a hologram in the show. She’s more human-like.
- The Spartan soldiers are called the Silver Team and not the Blue Team.
These are the most significant differences between the show and the game series. However, there’s a good chance that as more episodes come out, we might see more changes from the original franchise.
Conclusion
The Halo TV series is definitely worth watching, even for game loyalists. Although the creators have taken some liberty to try different things, none of it seems terrible so far.
If anything, the show might have too many things going on but still lack the depth we need to connect with it.
So far, two episodes have been released out of a total of ten in Season 1. You can watch Halo on Paramount+ every Thursday at 3 AM ET.
