It’s fun to clutch that last shot in Rocket League, where one of the hardest tricks to master is the Shadow Defense. Let’s examine what exactly Shadow Defense is and why you should learn it to be more effective in Rocket League.
It is very infuriating to always be the last one standing on the team, to defend against the aggressive attacks of the opponent team in Rocket League. But that has changed after learning the Shadow Defense, and I can confidently recommend that everyone learn this technique.
1. What is Shadow Defense in Rocket League?
When the enemy team attacks, most of us just move head-on into the challenge to get a tackle; shadow defense is precisely its opposite. Instead of facing your foes, turn around and mimick their movement; this gives you enough chance to guide the ball at the end into a corner.
Shadow defense is the defensive technique in Rocket League where you follow your opponent’s movements while facing away from them and tackling to regain the ball at the very last moment. Shadow defense lets players have better chances of defending than taking them on head first.
That does sound good on paper, but how does shadow defense work while you are in a match.
2. How to Shadow Defend in Rocket League?
Shadow Defense has two crucial ingredients – positioning and timing. Getting both of these correct, will result in a perfect shadow defense.
I. Position: Where to Shadow Defend From?
Initially, when I started using shadow defense in Rocket League, I was either too far or too close to the opponent to block the goal, and it made me feel stupid in front of my teammates! Then I realized that to shadow defend, you need to be on the same side as the opponent (divide the field into two halves lengthwise) and go towards your own goal.
After being on the right side, you just have to be at a moderate distance from the foe such that you don’t be too close to miss shots over your head or too far to not be able to block it!
Position yourselves in the same half as your opponent and be close enough to block and not miss overhead shots to Shadow Defend in Rocket League.
II. Timing: When to Go In
Next, you need to know when to jump in to push the ball into the corner. Try too early and you’ve given up your cards; be too late, and you’ve missed the cheese! What I found works the best, is to wait for your opponent to goof up. They’re only human, and when they see you make shady moves, they are more likely to mess up; that‘s when you get them!
When you start moving towards your goal, mimicking the opponent while being on the same side, wait for them to either slip-up or about to score to swoop in and finish your Shadow Defense in Rocket League.
3. When to Use Shadow Defend in Rocket League?
Shadow Defend in Rocket League should be used when you are the only thing between the attacker and the goal. Usually, in 1v1 matches or in team matches, when you are the last defender, it’s Shadow Defense time!
Shadow Defense is quite an effective technique, but what if you are on the wrong side of it? How would you defend against such a play?
4. How to Beat Shadow Defense in Rocket League?
Shadow Defending players can mimick your movements up to a specific point. They can’t go past the net or the boundary wall waiting for you to slip up. Thus, you need to hold steady on that ball before going in for the final strike, or you can try to get them to slip up by faking a gold instead. Believe me; they will eventually mess up!
To defend against Shadow Defense in Rocket League, hold on to the ball or fake a goal to get the defender to slip up. That’s when you score that goal.
That’s it to Shadow Defense in Rocket League, time for you to practice on some custom matches and be a star in your next ranked game.
