Mojang’s next outing, Minecraft Legends, is a spin-off of the original Minecraft game from developers Blackbird Interactive. Minecraft Legends is a real-time strategy game set in the world of Minecraft while still keeping the basics intact.
Minecraft Legends is a real-time strategy game which prioritizes action and strategy much more than the original Minecraft in a locked third-person perspective. The game will be a mixture between real-time strategy and building.
Here’s everything you need to know about Minecraft Legends:
1. How is the gameplay in Minecraft Legends?
Defending your settlements from Piglin mobs and marauders in Overworld is the focus in Minecraft Legends, mixing real-time strategy with building mechanics. The first gameplay footage for Minecraft Legends was shown off during the Minecraft Live 2022 Expo.
Players will be travelling through familiar biomes while collecting resources, fighting enemies and gathering allies. Friendly mobs such as llamas and badgers will help you throughout your journey.
Players will be able to spawn hostile mobs to aid them in battle against the Piglin invaders. Minecraft Legends will also contain cutscenes, just like Minecraft: Story Mode. This means that there will be a separate plot for the game.
Creative Director of Minecraft Legends, Magnus Nedfors, stated during an interview at Gamescom 2022 that the game’s core emphasis is forging alliances in order to take down Piglin inavders.
It’s not about your character getting stronger
You’re not getting new armor. It’s about making new friends and fighting the Piglins together.

2. Is there multiplayer and cross-play in Minecraft Legends?
Minecraft Legends will have both co-op and competitive multiplayer options. It will support cross-platform play as well. Co-op mode will allow players to play the campaign together and earn rewards. On the other hand, PvP will be completely disconnected from the game’s main story and will be a distinct mode.
PvP mode will have eight players in two teams of four, building a base and charging into battle against each other. Players will be able to build their own bases and defend against other players. The main goal of this mode is to destroy the base of the opposing team. Each match will take around 25 to 30 minutes to complete.
In both Co-op as well as PvP modes, Piglins will feature as PvE enemies. It is currently unknown how many players can join the same lobby in Co-op mode.
3. Who are the mobs and enemies in Minecraft Legends?
The main antagonists of Minecraft Legends will be the Piglin mobs. Defending the settlements from them is the main target of the game. Along with Piglins, there will be more familiar faces as well. All mobs, except the Piglins, will be non-hostile and friendly, which is a departure from the iconic Minecraft lore.
Here are all the hostile mobs that players will battle against in Minecraft Legends:
- Piglin – Grunter
- Piglin – Runt
- Piglin – Bruiser
- Piglin – Portal Guard
- Piglin – Piggo
- Zombies
- Skeletons
- Creepers
- Plank Golem
- Cobblestone Golem
- Grindstone Golem
- Mossy Golem
Each Piglin will belong to a different category, with different roles and disctinct designs. Grunters and Runts will be mook-level enemies, Bruisers and Portal Guards are beefier and more specialised types, while Piggos would be the mounts.
Golems will act as NPCs and help the players in battle. Plank Golems are ranged fighters with the features of a turret; Cobblestone Golems are the melee bruisers; Grindstone Golems provide defense to the settlements; and Mossy Golems heal the players.
4. When is Minecraft Legends releasing? Which platforms is it releasing on?
Minecraft Legends will be released on April 18th, 2023. It will arrive day one on Xbox Game Pass as well. As for platforms, Minecraft Legends will be launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
Players on Xbox and PC platforms will be able to get the game at no extra cost, if they’re subscribed to Game Pass.
5. Will Minecraft Legends be free?
Minecraft Legends is not a free-to-play game. Players will have to buy the game physically or digitally in order to play it. Additionally, the game is releasing on Xbox Game Pass, so players subscribed to the service can play it free of charge.
Players on PlayStation consoles will have to purchase the game from the store. It is not free-to-play. PC and Xbox players can get the benefit of playing it at no extra cost by being subscribed to Xbox Game Pass.
6. Will Minecraft Legends be open world?
Minecraft Legends will feature an open-world design in both Co-op as well as PvP modes. The world in Minecraft Legends is described as a “vivid open world filled with treasures and perils.” Players can defend their settlements, collect resources and forge allies through their journey.
It is worth noting that the size of the open world will be smaller than that of the original Minecraft. Players need to battle Piglin invaders in arena-like structures and defend their towns and settlements against them.
7. How is Minecraft Legends different from Minecraft?
As opposed to Minecraft’s chill sandboxy survival and crafting, Minecraft Legends is mixing both of those elements with real-time strategy elements, providing a complete brand-new Minecraft experience. Players will traverse through biomes, fight Piglins and gather allies to aid them in battle.
Players who are familiar with Minecraft will find it easier to get into Minecraft Legends. Much of the mechanics remain same and players will meet familiar faces from the original Minecraft as well.
8. Is Steve in Minecraft Legends?
Steve is not making an appearance in Minecraft Legends. While being the protagonist and face of the original Minecraft, Steve has no plans to be in Mojang’s next Minecraft game, Minecraft Legends.
If you’re one of those players who were holping for Steve to make an appearance in Minecraft Legends, you will be disappointed. However, there are plenty more secrets for you to enjoy in the game.
9. What is the size of Minecraft Legends on PC?
