What is Lady Miranjo’s plan in Ousama Ranking?

Miranjo has been introduced to fans as this scheming and mysterious shadow that is stuck inside a mirror. But did you know that she has had one of the saddest backstories in anime storytelling?

That’s right! For those who haven’t yet read the manga, I bet you are still wondering whether she’s good or evil. And because of these doubts, Miranjo’s been on many fans’ radars (even mine) since the anime started.

So, without further ado, let’s talk about the mysterious magic mirror — Lady Miranjo — and her significance in the series.

Lady Miranjo plans to spend a good long life with King Bosse. She is his savior and would like nothing more than to spend all the days of her life living with the strongest giant during feudal times.

Several scenes in the anime back up how fond she is of him. For example, the brief dance she had with him in episode 9 supports her kindling affection for him.

And what of King Bosse’s thoughts about the dance? Well, truth be told, it seems that the king himself reciprocates her feelings to some degree even though he already married two women: Queen Sheena (Prince Bojji’s mom), and Queen Hilling (Prince Daida’s mom).

But don’t worry! He won’t marry for the third time even if Miranjo insists he does. He’s had enough of sacrificing children: he already sacrificed Bojji’s strength, then Daida’s body.

The third time’s the charm, so he won’t be pulling another royal child of his like a lamb to the slaughter.

How Did Miranjo Get Stuck In The Magic Mirror?

Miranjo made a deal with the devil. She requested for the devil to extend her life as she lay dying on the ground.

In exchange for an extension of her life, the devil placed Miranjo’s soul on a pocket mirror she’s been carrying to signal the villagers from afar that it’s time to fire their arrows and spears to assassinate Queen Sheena.

As a side note, here’s a quick explanation of her death:

Miranjo is dying after being accidentally shot with several spears and arrows by villagers whom she convinced to join the war between giants and several fantastical creatures.

She also convinced the villagers to throw several spears and arrows to kill Queen Sheena (Prince Bojji’s mom).

The pocket mirror Miranjo’s been carrying became her own prison as the devil puts her soul and caged it inside an enlarged version of the pocket mirror. 

To add a little bit of flavor to her backstory, Miranjo befriended the devil when they were children.

This is also shown in the 2nd opening of Ousama Ranking. They became mutual friends during their childhood because they find solace with one another.

Both suffered at the hands of evildoers: corrupt and brainwashed villagers in Miranjo’s case; and unknown bullies in the form of fantastical creatures, in the devil’s case.

With this aspect of themselves to bond with, they got to know one another better and became one another’s “best playmates” during their childhood.

Is The Magic Mirror Good Or Evil?

Miranjo is initially shown to be an evil sorceress in the series. But as the show fleshes her character out, it’s revealed to the audience that Miranjo was also a victim.

In other words, she was also one of the good characters in the show once upon a time.

Miranjo is Ousama Ranking’s dynamic character whom the audience thought was a one-trick pony because she debuted as an evil sorceress stuck in a magic mirror.

But her backstory revealed why she became the way she is: greedy, selfish, and manipulative.

She developed all these traits for the sake of her beloved King Bosse whom she wants to be the strongest and longest-living giant while living alongside him during feudal times.

It’s also important to mention how Miranjo became a victim. During her childhood, brainwashed and corrupted villagers kidnapped her. They tied her so she can resist fleeing from them.

They grazed her face until only the muscles and tissues of her face were left; they cut off her arms for sheer enjoyment; then, they leave her dead at the town square.

After this dreadful deed, the civilians only ignored the ragged corpse of Miranjo tied at the village center.

But King Bosse saw the dead girl. He went on a rampage and killed every citizen in the village, including women and children.

After the murderous bloodbath, King Bosse took Miranjo’s corpse, as well as any wholly intact bodies of his victims.

He went to an old mage in a faraway forest and gave him the corpses he collected. He requested the old mage to rebuild little Miranjo’s body from the flesh and bones of the victims he murdered at the village.

In essence, the muscles, tissues, and bones of King Bosse’s victims from the village become the “materials” per se to resurrect little Miranjo.

Miranjo may seem like the manipulator behind King Bosse’s actions.

But as Daida takes care of her soul (in child form) in the void, Daida is getting to know there’s another kind and wondrous side of Miranjo that he and the audience have yet to see!

Ōsama Ranking (Ranking of Kings) is a Japanese comedy manga series by Sōsuke Tōka. It has been serialized online via Echoes’ user-submitted Manga Hack website since May 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Wit Studio premiered in October 2021.

The story centers around Bojji, a deaf, powerless prince who cannot even wield a children’s sword. As the firstborn son, he strives hard and dreams of becoming the world’s greatest king.

However, people mutter about him behind his back as “a good-for-nothing prince” and “no way he can be king.” Bojji is able to make his first-ever friend, Kage, a literal shadow on the ground who somehow understands Bojji well.

The story follows Bojji’s coming-of-age as he meets various people in his life, starting with his fateful encounter with Kage.
