After several rounds of incredible battles between the monsters in Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla allowed the Hollow Earth King Kong to live. And even though the undisputed winner of the final battle was Godzilla, no one can argue that the lizard had quite the powerful adversary in Kong.
Regardless of their mutual rivalry about their status as the King of the Monsters, Godzilla and Kong found a way to form an unusual alliance at the end when defeating their common enemy Mechagodzilla. And that involved using what was perhaps the most important prop in Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong’s Battle Ax.
Such an ax it was that it proved to be a challenge even for someone as mighty as Godzilla himself. Not only that, the ax is exactly what defeats Mechagodzilla. So how did Godzilla and Kong use this mysterious weapon against their enemy and call it a truce? Let’s find out!
1. What Is It Made Of?
The first hint of what the ax is made of comes from the color of the spikes, which is very similar to the dorsal spikes on the giant lizard’s back. The long end of the ax is made up of bone, while the sharp spikes at the other end are actually, surprise, surprise, made of Godzilla’s own body.
Writer Max Bornstein revealed more about the axe to Collider:
“To me, it’s like Godzilla’s scales have this conductive, radioactive quality, and the primate Kongs had a kind of evolved civilization of sorts, as primates might, and simple tools and had used the spine of a Godzilla creature to create it. Presumably, there are more like it, but it feels like the iconic scepter of the King.”
Max Bornstein
The ax is made of one of Godzilla’s ancestors’ dorsal spikes, thereby storing and retaining radiation. And since Bornstein talks about the primate Kongs being able to create weapons, let’s talk about who could have made Kong’s ax in the movie.
2. Who Made the Ax?
The fact that Kong is wielding the ax suggests that he, or his ancestors, used the ever-evolving Kong dexterity to fashion the ax using the dorsal spikes attached to the bone. Moreover, this isn’t the first time a Kong and Godzilla have been up against each other, so it is highly possible that one of the previous Kongs may have torn off a dorsal plate from a Godzilla during a brawl.
This could have happened in the Titan war that took place thousands of years ago, leaving the bone of one of the Titans to be made into a hilt. In the movie, we see Kong finding his way back to his home in Hollow Earth, where he comes across a roughly made weapon entrenched in the ground.
Later on, when he goes inside the fortress’ great hall, he discovers an ax-shaped hole in the ground. And the moment Kong fits the ax inside the hole, the ax glows and the entire hall lights up. Kong finding the weapon familiar implies clearly that the weapon was made by one or more of his ancestors.
But that’s not where it stops. Not only is the ax made of dorsal fins, but the monkey temple is, too. This raises the question, in the Titan war that took place ages ago, is it possible that the Kong species won against the Godzilla species? Tell us your theories in the comments!
3. What Can the Ax Do?
The makers wanted Kong to have an equal footing against Godzilla, which led to the introduction of this new weapon. According to Gojipedia, the ax is capable of absorbing and even storing Godzilla’s atomic breath along with all kinds of radiation.
The ax proved to be Kong’s best chance at defeating Godzilla and claiming the title of the alpha Titan himself, so it’s clearly quite an incredible weapon.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty talked about this back in 2019:
“We’re looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla’s going to fight Kong, your first reaction is Kong doesn’t stand a chance. Godzilla’s got his radioactive breath, et cetera, et cetera. Kong is extremely intelligent. As a primate, he’s a tool user. So he’s got speed, he’s got agility, he might have some good size.”
Michael Dougherty
Looks like the ax might need both Kong and Godzilla to harness its true potential. How, you ask? Let’s talk about that.
4. Is the Ax More Powerful than Godzilla?
We know from the movie that Godzilla’s radiations charge up the ax, and it becomes rather deadly as a result. Turns out, Godzilla was able to defeat Kong and disarm him during the second battle, but would the ax have defeated the giant lizard if Kong had not been disarmed?
Not just that, the ax protected Kong from Godzilla’s atomic breath during the battle as well.
But there’s something even more intriguing about the weapon. Since even Kong was able to sense its familiarity back in his ancestral fortress of the Hollow Earth, the weapon is actually a combination of both these undefeatable monsters. It could well be made of not just one but two Titans.
This is proven at the end of the movie when Kong and Godzilla rally together to fight Mechagodzilla. Kong wields the ax against Mechagodzilla, but it doesn’t do much because of its loss of energy. So, when Godzilla fires his atomic breath at the ax, it gains the exact power required to finish off Mechagodzilla. So finally, the ax is what unites the two titan monsters and helps them to call it a truce as they return to their respective realms in the end.
