AMD releases source code for FSR 2.2 and introduces new features

AMD and GPU Open have just made the source code for FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.2 available to the full spectrum of developers. This means that everyone can now start to implement and upgrade to FSR 2.2.

At CES 2023, AMD announced an update to FSR 2 with better handling of the ‘high velocity ghosting’. This effect could be observed in games such as NFS Unbound or Forza Horizon 5, both already updated with FSR 2.2, AMD’s latest version of temporal upscaling technology.

One of the things about FSR 2.2 is that it reduces “fizzing” artifacts and improves temporal stability, meaning you can expect fewer flickering issues in your games. Plus, with the new API debugger, developers can more easily integrate this technology into their games, making for a smoother overall experience.

For instance, FSR 2.2 enhances HDR quality, providing a more vibrant and realistic visual experience for gamers.

A quick-reference table created by GPU Open provides an overview of these tweaks, giving developers a more comprehensive understanding of the changes and new features in FSR 2.2.

Developers updating their titles to support the latest API will face a “relatively simple” task, but it’s still good practice to rebuild integrations with the new headers.

It’s also worth noting that FSR 2.2 introduces some changes that may affect how values in both Reactive Mask and Transparency & Composition Mask textures impact upscaling. Therefore, developers need to adjust these mask contents to achieve the best quality.

In the meantime, FSR 2.2 is on the way to the Unreal Engine, with updates on progress due shortly. FSR upscaling has made it into 250 games so far, and out of that number, 110 support the new FSR 2.X technology. AMD expects the balance in favor of FSR 2.X to reach a tipping point soon.
