Despite his simple beginnings as a manaless peasant, Asta is on his way to becoming one of the most powerful magic knights in the Clover Kingdom.
In the recent chapters, Yuno was revealed to be a prince of the Spade Kingdom, but he was not the only one who had his parentage revealed. Asta’s past was delved into, and the reason behind him being manaless was finally explained.
Asta’s origins and past are some of the most mysterious aspects of Black Clover. While there have been speculations regarding his parentage and relation to Licht, Dante, and even more outrageous theories, chapter 268 puts them all to rest.
1. What is Asta’s Origin?
Asta’s origins were very simple at the beginning of the series. He was an orphan that was brought up and raised in Hage village. However, as his powers grew, it became easier to assume that maybe Asta’s origins were not as simple as shown.
One of the few theories states that Asta is the child of a demon and a mage, whose powers canceled each other out and resulted in him being mana-less. Another speculates that Asta might be the reincarnation of Licht and Tetia’s child. There are many others, including those that sound pretty interesting but are ultimately false.
Chapter 268 of Black Clover finally revealed the identity of Asta’s mother as well as the reason behind him having no mana.
Asta’s mother is Lichita, and she is directly responsible for him being manaless. Lichita’s body absorbed the vital energy and mana of any living being near her, forcing her to abandon her son lest he died. While Asta survived, his mana was robbed from his body, resulting in his present state.
While this chapter gave us a clue into Asta’s origin, there’s still no new information about his father. Is it because his father is not relevant to the story, or that his role is far more important than we think?
While there’s no conclusive answer right now, let’s take a look at some old theories speculating Asta’s origins and his father’s identity.
I. Dante and Asta’s Clash
Dante, one of the Dark Triad members, attacked the Black Bulls base looking to abduct Captain Yami. While Asta tried to stop him, his strength proved inferior. During their fight, Asta had a flashback where he saw his mother being stabbed.
This brief scene caused hundreds of debates, comments, and theories about the possibility of Dante being Asta’s father. Some believed that being the cold-blooded killer that he is, Dante killed his wife for birthing a manaless son or that he stole Asta’s mana but couldn’t kill him because of his mother’s sacrifice.
These theories have been proved wrong as the mang made Dante’s connection to Asta clear. Lucifero, the devil Dante hosts in his body, killed Asta’s mother, Lichita, for protecting the Anti Magic devil.
So no, Dante is not Asta’s father, nor does he have any literal relationship with his mother.
II. Is Asta Licht’s Son?
Licht was the wielder of the four-leaf clover grimoire that sprouted another leaf after falling for Zagred’s ploy. Due to the elf’s deep despair about his tribe’s massacre, his Grimoire turned into the Grimore of Despair, which later found its way to Asta.
Many people in the fandom had been theorizing about Asta’s possible connection to Licht, and as expected, one popped up claiming the elf to be Asta’s father.
However, when the Queen of the Witches healed Asta’s arm, she concluded that he is not from the elf tribe but is just connected to Licht through his Grimoire. The Queen surmised that Asta probably has a mutation that makes him mana less and gives him the ability to use Anti-Magic.
The Witch Queen’s diagnosis, as well as the recent reveal, discredit this theory. Asta is not Licht’s son and possesses no ounce of elf blood in him. End of the story.
2. What is Asta’s Last Name?
Asta’s origins remain a mystery, as he was left at the Hage Village orphanage by Lichita shortly after he was born. He spent his early years growing up there with the other children serving as his family. Due to this, Asta does not have a last name, and we have not been made privy to Lichita’s either.
However, in the one-shot pilot series, which is very different from the current manga, both Asta and Yuno have last names. We learn that Asta’s last name there is actually Staria, and Yuno’s is Crossley. However, in the manga, Yuno’s revealed to be a part of the Grinberryal family, thus making that his official last name, which Asta still goes by his given name.
3. Are Asta and Yuno Brothers?
Asta and Yuno were left at the orphanage in Hage village together. This made us believe that the two were either brothers or had some relations similar to that. However, as they grew up, they couldn’t be more different; one had an abundance of mana, while the other was mana less.
The manga finally disclosed Yuno’s identity as the only heir to the Spade Kingdom and Asta’s mother, Lichita. This clarifies that Yuno and Asta are not brothers and do not hail from the same kingdom and lineage, despite growing up together as siblings.
