There has been no shortage of survival horror games this year, with plenty of them coming out this year and iconic franchises like Dead Space and Resident Evil making a comeback. Developer Frictional Games’ acclaimed survival horror series Amnesia is also making a comeback this year with a fourth chapter.
Amnesia: The Bunker is an upcoming first-person survival horror game developed by Frictional Games. It’s the fourth game in the Amnesia series. The game will feature a lot of the core elements of its predecessors, and it’s set in a desolate World War I bunker.
Amnesia: The Bunker puts players in control of Henri Clément, a French soldier who’s left alone in the darkness of the bunker as he tries to make sense of what’s going on. Set during WWI, it’s up to him to tackle the horrors of the bunker and make his way out of it alive.
It’s a nightmarish horror experience, following suit with previous Amnesia titles, that is bound to give players an intense time surviving the threats inside the bunker. Players must keep the lights on to survive the creature lurking inside the bunker, which not only stalks them but also adapts to their ways.
I. Is Amnesia: The Bunker open world?
Amnesia: The Bunker won’t be an open world, but it’ll be a semi-open world, allowing players to explore and experiment through multiple playthroughs in order to make their way out of the bunker. It’s also the first semi-open-world game in the series.
The bunker will not be as large or diverse as some of the environments featured in Amnesia: Rebirth, but it’ll still be pretty explorable, and players will also be able to explore some areas outside the bunker itself. Even though it’s a semi-open world, each subsection will have its own features and characteristics, making the location fresh for players to explore.
II. Will Amnesia: The Bunker have weapons?
Amnesia: The Bunker will indeed feature weapons, hence deviating from the series formula of running away from threats. Players will be equipped with a revolver, which will not only serve as a weapon but also as a tool as it can be used for various things, according to creative lead Frederik Olsson.
Although it’s worth noting that the revolver has extremely scarce ammo, it should be used as a last resort instead of just shooting enemies on sight. So, it works more as a tool for survival than a weapon for combating threats, which adds a whole new layer of intensity to the gameplay.
III. How long is Amnesia: The Bunker?
Amnesia: The Bunker will take around 4-6 hours to complete, which is much shorter than the series’ previous installments, which were around 8-10 hours long, but the length can vary from player to player as some players might take their time to explore the game in its entirety while others might speedrun through it.
In an interview with GamingBolt, Olsson said “For the average player, we estimate the playtime of a single playthrough to be around 4-6 hours, but it can vary quite a bit. The game’s focus is not necessarily on its length but instead on the challenge of surviving. So while some players may finish the game in as little as four hours, others may take their time to explore, think about their next move, experiment, and strategize. In the end, the duration of the game will be significantly influenced by the player’s skills and courage, as well as their preferred playstyle and decision-making.”
IV. How difficult is Amnesia: The Bunker?
Amnesia: The Bunker is said to be more challenging than its predecessors due to its intense gameplay and focus on exploration and strategizing. The inclusion of the revolver adds a layer of complexity to the gameplay, and scarce ammo makes tense situations even more challenging.
In the interview with GamingBolt, Olsson said, “We want to give the player a deeply immersive experience with much more agency and freedom. Unlike our previous titles, The Bunker is a difficult game that requires players to rely on their own instincts and problem-solving skills. It’s reminiscent of the games we grew up with, where experimentation was key and hand-holding was rare.”
V. Does Amnesia: The Bunker have a demo?
Amnesia: The Bunker indeed has a demo available to download for free on Steam, so you can see for yourself how the game works. The demo is not available on any platform other than PC, and it contains just a little slice of the full game.
The Steam description of the demo reads, “Trapped in a WW1 bunker, a relentless monster stalks you. Survival depends on finding tools, crafting items, and keeping the lights on.” It gives players a taste of the horrors that are to come in the full game, so go ahead and give it a shot.
VI. When and on what platforms does Amnesia: The Bunker release?
Amnesia: The Bunker is set to release next week on June 6, and it’ll be arriving on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. A PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch release isn’t in development as of now, but that might change in the future.
It makes sense for the game to release on PS5 considering that it’s releasing on Xbox Series X|S, but Frictional Games has yet to say anything on that matter. The new PlayStation blog about the game also doesn’t contain any mention of a PS5 release. Hopefully that’ll change when the game releases, but until then, keep an eye out on the game’s social media for updates.
