Vinland Saga’s second season is setting the stage for a true masterpiece! Thorfinn’s outlook on life has completely changed, and he’s got some new buddies along for the ride.
Leif is reunited with Thorfinn, but soon after, Arnheid dies from serious injuries. Thorfinn and Einar seek to establish a peaceful society in Vinland. They all travel back to Iceland, where another addition is made to their crew.
Unfortunately, it also marks the start of a long conflict with Sigurd. So, let’s delve into all the significant events Thorfinn and his party experienced on their voyage.
1 Arnheid’s Haunting Past and Harrowing Fate
One day, out of nowhere, Arnheid’s husband, Gardar, showed up on Ketil’s farm. Arnheid then spilled the beans about how Vikings had taken her son and sold her into slavery while her man was off fighting in battle.
However, she didn’t dwell on the past and wanted to focus on her future with the farm owner. Eventually, Gardar bit one of the guards and made a break for it, escaping together with Arnheid.
Things got really ugly when Ketil beat Arnheid nearly to death after
discovering she had tried to run away. Sadly, Arnheid eventually died from her injuries, thanking Thorfinn and Einar for taking care of her in her final days.
2 The Long-Awaited Reunion of Leif and Thorfinn
I was overjoyed to see that Leif never gave up on finding Thorfinn, and to everyone’s delight, the day finally arrived when they were reunited.
Leif urged Thorfinn to leave with him when he met him in Ketil’s farm. After burying Arnheid, the two buddies, Thorfinn and Einar, decided that their mission in life was to go to Vinland and set up a peaceful society.
3 Thorfinn’s Deal: 100 Punches for Peace
Thorfinn wanted to negotiate peace with King Canute before leaving the farm, but Einar thought it was a bad idea. The Vikings disagreed with Thorfinn’s request and made him an offer:
If Thorfinn could take 100 punches without falling, the Vikings would let him meet with King Canute. It was a brutal challenge, but Thorfinn managed to endure it and gained the respect of the Vikings.
He then tried to persuade Canute to spare the farm, but he refused. Thorfinn realized he had no choice but to run and admitted he wasn’t sure if Canute’s decisions were moral.
4 Thorfinn Returns Home to Iceland
In the final part of the farmland arc, Canute and Thorfinn split up, and they were both getting ready to make their mark on the world.
But before that, Thorfinn decided to head over to Iceland to visit his mum
and sister, whom he hadn’t seen for a whopping 18 years!
Thorfinn, along with Einar and Leif, finally made it to Iceland, and
when he saw his sister, Ylva, she didn’t even recognize him at first! But luckily, their mum spotted him right away, and Ylva even gave him a new haircut.
5 Gudrid’s Unexpected Entry into the Crew
Things were going well before a young girl named Gudrid showed up out of the blue. She was trying to get on Leif’s boat, but nobody knew why.
Thorfinn asked Halfdan for some resources to help settle in Vinland. Halfdan wasn’t too hot on the idea since the natives might cause some trouble.
Thorfinn, Einar, and Leif decided to head to Greece for some trading. Gudrid ran away from her husband, Sigurd, and sneaked onto Leif’s boat! Thorfinn told her to do as she pleased, so she stuck around and became part of the crew.
6 Planting the Seeds of Conflict
I bet most folks would have considered it a major red flag if their spouse stabbed them and then bolted right after saying, “I do.” But apparently, Sigurd didn’t get the memo on that one.
Sigurd was ticked off at Gudrid for making him look bad and decided to track her down to take revenge. It was like a game of pursuit from there on! This whole situation set off a chain of events that had significant consequences later on.
As they made their way to Vinland, Thorfinn’s crew had a whole bunch of
new obstacles coming their way – but don’t worry, there are still plenty of
sweet moments to look forward to!
