The finale of Apple’s thriller series Hijack ends with a resolution of several major plot threads and a revelation of the outcome of Sam and the Cheapside Firm hijackers.
The series unveiled the final destination of Kingdom Flight 29 and the true motives behind the hijacking, which involved a complex scheme for financial gain rather than ideological reasons.
The series finale also explained the consequences for Stuart, Jamie, and the hijackers, as well as the successful application of Sam’s negotiation skills to achieve a favorable but tumultuous outcome.
The ending of Hijack suggests that the series does not leave room for a second season. Although some minor characters could benefit from further exploration in a potential sequel, the finale provides a definitive resolution to the thrilling action series.
The major twist in Hijack episode 6 revealed a hidden hijacker named Amanda in the cockpit, who became the key factor in deciding the fate of Kingdom Flight 29.
1. The Real Motive Behind the Hijack Explained
The hijacking is finally exposed as a relatively straightforward scheme to manipulate the stock market and generate huge profits for the organized crime group the Cheapside Firm and its associates.
The Cheapside Firm used the threat of the hijacking to secure the release of two of their vital members from prison and to cause the share price of Kingdom Airlines to drop drastically so that they would benefit from the decline of the stock’s value.
Edgar, John, and several key actors including Alec and Devlin, placed bets against or ‘shorted’ Kingdom Airlines stock price right before the flight departed, ensuring that they would receive a massive payout from the negative publicity.
The large number of characters in Hijack shows the wide influence and danger of the Cheapside Firm. The group was previously revealed in episode 5 to be a highly menacing and influential organized crime group that operates covert routes for illegal trade in and out of the UK.
The series does not clarify how or why the Cheapside Firm planned such a massive hijacking for any other reason than to earn an enormous amount of money in a short span of time. The Hijack finale suggests that the motive of the hijacking was solely planned to acquire a massive financial gain via stock market manipulation.
2. Sam Wins Over Stuart
Sam faced difficulties throughout Hijack to preserve Stuart’s trust because he was constantly attempting to apply his own style of persuasion on him to ensure his safety and that of everyone on board Kingdom Flight 29.
Stuart had many chances to kill Sam, who caused numerous problems with the hijackers’ plans. Stuart ultimately never harmed Sam in any serious way due to underlying respect or some other form of appreciation he secretly held for him.
Sam’s skills as a professional business negotiator are finally effective in winning Stuart over when Stuart gives the loaded gun to Sam in finale, just as Sam did to Stuart in episode 2.
3. Amanda is Actually a Victim
Amanda’s direct communication with Edgar in the finale is explained to be a consequence of her own mission to protect her daughter, and not because she is affiliated to the Cheapside Firm in any way.
Amanda, despite killing Captain Robin in cold blood, is very much a victim in her own right, doing what she is strictly instructed to do by Edgar via text message so that she can secure her daughter’s safety.
The Hijack finale clarifies that Amanda is a former aviation consultant and member of the United States Navy. She is being exploited by Edgar specifically to increase the total profits of the stock market scheme and was prepared to crash the plane if necessary to save her daughter’s life.
4. Why did John kill Edgar?
John and Edgar had apparently been partners in crime for decades as two of the most elite and influential members of the Cheapside Firm. This, however, did not prevent John from having Edgar killed once he discovers that Edgar had arranged his own scheme with Amanda for the larger share of stake.
John could see that Edgar’s greed had overcome him and realized that he had individually manipulated Amanda into possibly crashing the plane if it was the most profitable outcome. John saw this as a sign of disloyalty against the Cheapside Firm and quickly killed Edgar as if he meant nothing at all to him.
5. The Fate of Amanda: Is she free?
Amanda appears to walk away freely from Kingdom Flight 29 after she successfully lands the plane in a rather dramatic and destructive manner. Sam was able to make a deal with the Home Minister of the UK that ensured Amanda would not face criminal charges, seeing as she was another victim of Edgar and the Cheapside Firm’s plan like many others.
Amanda is taken away from the plane by a flight attendant named Deevia as she emotionally calls her daughter and tells her that she’s coming home. It’s an incredible outcome for Amanda considering her participation and involvement in the hijacking scheme, which again included killing an innocent pilot.
However, Amanda should have been accountable for her crimes on Kingdom Flight 29 and should not have walked away without facing charges especially after nearly killing everyone on the plane.
The rationale behind her actions shouldn’t ignore the undeniable blood on her hands, especially since her own victimhood created a victim in the mostly innocent Captain Robin whose life she took.
Sam is somehow able to disregard all of that and hug Amanda in the final moments of the Hijack finale as if being a mother trying to protect her child somehow excuses putting dozens of other families and lives, including his own, in severe danger.

Hijack is an upcoming British thriller miniseries created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith. It will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 28, 2023.
Idris Elba plays the main character, Sam Nelson. Other cast members include Archie Panjabi, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Eve Myles, and Mohamed Elsandel.
The story follows Flight KA29, hijacked from Dubai to London during its seven-hour journey. Corporate negotiator Sam Nelson, a passenger on the plane, must try to use his professional skills to save everyone on board.
