Does Ciri (Finally) Become a Witcher in Season 2?

In The Witcher Season 2, Ciri starts training as a witcher. The show is expected to make her one in adopted identity, but not in blood.

How is Ciri Useful to the Witchers?

This season is one of revelations — We find out that Ciri is of Elder Blood, the last in existence right now. Elder blood is also an important component for the mutagen inserted into humans to make them witchers.

Vesemir informs her that they’re unable to make more witchers because those with Elder blood died out a long time ago. Thereafter, the witcher mutagens were destroyed during the attack at Kaer Morhen.

Vesemir

Ciri is not only willing to give her blood to make a new mutagen, she also wants to be the first person to test it out.

You see, despite Geralt’s grunting and the witchers’ harsh ways of showing encouragement, she has grown to love and care for them. She wants to be part of their family by actually becoming a witcher, along with believing it’s the best route to fighting off all the threats in her path.

Ciri’s Origins

Not only is Ciri of Elder Blood, she is also the prophesied Daughter of Chaos.

Let me shed some light on that. Remember Episode 5, where Triss performs Dol Durza on Ciri, and they both enter her mind?

Ciri’s Origins
Ciri

They find out that a long time ago, ancient Elven sages created a mutated gene that would result in a child with unimaginable power, able to open pathways between different worlds.

However, this gene was thought to have died out with Lara Dorren. Lara is the Elven warrior from Nivellen’s story in Episode 1 and the lady who appears with a baby in Ciri’s mind during Dol Durza.

As it turns out, the gene was never lost, only dormant within Lara’s bloodline, whose descendent happens to be Ciri.

This means that to the Elves, Ciri would be someone who can bring them hope and salvation. To the other kingdoms, she is to be forced or cajoled into submitting her powers for their benefit.

Will Ciri Become a Witcher?

Yes and no.

Witchers undergo the fatalistic Trial of the Grasses because they need to become powerful enough to fight monsters. But Ciri is already (too) powerful on her own to even need the witcher mutagen.

In the books, Ciri’s decision is a little more ambiguous, while the video games do have an option to have her take up the witcher’s profession officially.

In either case, it is unlikely that Ciri will be inserted with the witcher mutagen in the show, which means she won’t be a witcher on a technical basis.

This is the classic case of Ciri coming to realize it’s not blood that makes family, but the bonds you share with them.

Geralt and Ciri

Season 2’s finale is aptly titled “Family” as Ciri, Geralt, and Yen will become one. Acting as her parental figures, Geralt will teach Ciri the ways of a witcher, while Yen will show her how to control her magic.
