Episode 5 of Sugar is titled ‘Boy in the Corner’ and focuses on Davy Siegal, especially after the big news revealed in the previous episode.
The episode explores Davy’s situation – will he be held accountable, or will he use his power and wealth to escape the consequences again?
The episode offers a tense confrontation for the first time by delving deeper into Davy’s character. After briefly straying away from the central mystery surrounding John Sugar’s secret in the previous episode, the ending hints at it again.
1. How does Sugar Episode 5 End?
The ending of Sugar Episode 5 shows a distressed Davy being persuaded by his mother as he reflects on the success of his debut album ‘Boy in the Corner.’
Margit assures him he will bounce back like a caring mother because influential people support him. However, the news has deeply shaken him, and he’s now haunted by the prospect of how he’ll be perceived.
He’s also burdened by guilt over Sugar’s final words, which implied he was supposed to protect his sister instead of putting her in harm’s way. After his mother retires for the night, he goes into the bathroom, retrieves one of the mini-revolvers he had kept there and shoots himself in the head.
Margit calls Bernie, who arrives in a state of absolute panic and takes his only son to the hospital. It’s unclear whether Davy will survive the fatal shot and given that his character doesn’t seem central to the narrative, he may be killed off.
2. Will John tell his secret to Melanie?
The final moments of the episode show Melanie going to John’s hotel room after the mishap at her place. She takes up the couch as John goes to the shower and then writes about his freakout at her house that day.
John himself is not aware that he would react to something in such a violent way, but it feels like things are getting a little too murky for him.
The episode ends with John, unable to sleep, going to the couch and lying beside Melanie on the floor. He tells her that he has a secret he cannot tell anyone. A consolidating Melanie offers him her ears.
Will John tell Melanie his secret? Does he trust her enough to tell whatever’s been haunting him? Who is he? These are a few questions we have right now, and answers lie somewhere in the mystery of Sugarland.
3. Why are Stallings in Mexico?
In the previous episode, we saw Stallings telling his associates that he wouldn’t return until a few days. When Davy told John about him, he said he would return the next day. So, what exactly is he up to?
In a brief sequence, we see Stallings and his associates stopping a bus from Mexico towards the US border and rounding up all the traditionally pretty girls. Their business there is to take these girls away from the bus forcibly and trafficking them.
4. How did Davy know Stallings?
John also visits Davy’s place, but Margit is like a wall trying to protect her son from possible problems. She is not open to John talking to Davy, and again, this makes it clear that she stands by her son’s actions.
John is determined, and Davy, who has been listening from the other room, decides to talk to him despite the threat Margit thinks he can bring to her son.
For the first time in the show, a very nervous Davy admits to Sugar that he has done bad things. He blames it all on his fame and women throwing themselves at him. This is a classic case of the predator blaming the victim for his own mistakes.
John, however, is not particularly interested in knowing why Davy did all those things. He is there to understand how Olivia’s disappearance is connected to it. He questions Davy about Olivia, and we hear his association with Stallings coming to the forefront.
5. What does Davy tell John about Olivia?
John repeatedly asked Olivia’s whereabouts during their conversation, and Davy finally admitted that he might have asked Stallings to look after his half-sister when she became persistent about Taylor sticking to her story and making Davy’s behavior public.
Again, Davy tried to cover up his actions by saying he only did it because his new movie was coming out, and the news would ruin his reputation. He then shared Stallings’ address with John.
6. Who is Miller?
Ruby drives to a secluded location and meets with Miller, someone she has mentioned before but hasn’t seen until now. It’s clear that Miller is Ruby’s superior and likely runs the agency John Sugar is a part of.
Ruby informs Miller that John is deeply immersed in his current case. As he gets closer to the conclusion, John may need help understanding the reasons behind the situation. From the conversation, it seems Miller and the others are aware of Stallings and are trying to maintain a certain “balance” by preventing John from interfering.
Ruby says it’s challenging to keep John away from the case as he has a solid moral stance they can’t comprehend. However, Miller instructs Ruby to ensure John stays away from the case and doesn’t take it personally.
