Assane Diop returned in Lupin Season 3, which ended on a cliffhanger, hinting that the story is not over despite his landing in jail. Lupin season 3 picks up a year later, with Assane living in Marseilles. A decision to fake his death and plan one final heist led him back to Paris, but the return of his mother Mariama and an old enemy changed his plans entirely.
Lupin season 3 concludes with Assane reuniting with his family, including Mariama, and getting Manon out of prison by the corrupt French Minister of the Interior.
Assane reveals how he and Brune were forced to rob a jewelry store by Keller years ago. Keller pressured Bruno into shooting a cop, then crashed the car and framed Assane for the crime. Now, in the present day, Assane sets a trap leading to Keller’s arrest by police.
Assane ultimately surrenders to Guedira. He gets Ben released from prison and writes letters explaining everything to Claire and Raoul.
Manon opens a gym with the money from the black pearl. In prison, Assane finds solace in his Lupin books until a message from his neighbor reveals it’s none other than Hubert Pellegrini.
1. What Happens to Keller?
Jean-Luc Keller wanted revenge on Assane ever since the boy put the gun in his hand, which led to his conviction as a murderer.
Keller waited long to return to Assane and used his mother, whom he tracked down in Senegal, to make Assane’s life difficult. In the end, however, Keller’s people turned against him.
One of them tells the cops about him after Keller tries to kill him by throwing him off a window. The other one, Manon, gets an offer from Assane and finds it better to leave her boss after she discovers what happened all those years ago.
Keller fails to kill Assane’s family due to Claire’s quick thinking. Assane sets up a meeting with him at Arc de Triomphe to settle matters between them under the impression that he’d give Keller the Black Pearl.
However, it was a trap. The cops arrest Keller, who might have assumed that Assane would never go to the cops because they’d stop him, too.
In the end, Keller is arrested for several crimes, which means he is going back to prison.
2. What Happens to the Black Pearl?
While the cops are busy arresting Keller, Assane finds a way to get the Black Pearl out of their reach. He hides it inside a flower and gives it to a woman, claiming that he bought it for his date, who never showed up. When the cops arrive, the tourists are instructed to leave.
The girl leaves with the flower, which is how Bruno identifies her. He says that he is the date who was supposed to show up, but he reached there late. He asks the girl for a flower, claiming that he could still salvage what remains of his date with it. The girl gives him the flower and the pearl with it.
As Keller goes to prison and Assane faces the music, Bruno does away with the pearl.
Seeing the bag of cash on his desk in the final scene, we can assume that he sold the pearl to the highest bidder on the black market and made a lot of money, some of which he shared with Manon. He might also hold on to Assane’s share of the loot until he exits prison.
Considering the final scene of the season, it might happen sooner rather than later.
3. Does Assane Go to Prison?
At the end of Lupin season 2, we saw Assane run from the police, but Claire told him that the only way to make things right was to turn himself in.
While Claire no longer believed that, Assane promised to turn himself in. Moreover, Assane knew being arrested would finally keep his family out of the spotlight.
The media now knew he was alive and behind bars, so Claire and Raoul wouldn’t be hounded by journalists wanting a story at every turn.
Assane was finally at peace. His mother had returned, and his family and closest friend were safe. He had effectively run his last heist and dealt with someone from his past.
Assane no longer needed to prove himself or seek revenge, so he felt it was time to make good on his promise to Detective Guedira. Of course, Assane could have easily gotten away, but he knew that if he had, he and his family would always be on the run. It would be a never-ending cycle, and Assane couldn’t let that happen to those he loved.
4. Who Sends the Letter to Assane? Who is His Neighbour in Prison?
In the final scene of ‘Lupin’ Part 3, a guard gives Assane an envelope, saying it’s from his neighbor in the other cell.
The envelope contains Assane’s picture holding an Arsene Lupin novel, ‘The Cagliostro’s Revenge.’ The title states that the book is about an old enemy using someone close to Lupin to exact revenge on him.
The sender plans to do the same, and they have been designing and might already have set the plan in motion. When the camera turns to the next cell and the sender is notified of the message’s delivery, it is revealed that the neighbor is none other than Hubert Pellegrini.
Hubert and Assane have had bad blood since the beginning of his story. Hubert framed Assane’s father for stealing a necklace and later had him killed in prison.
Assane exacts his revenge years later when he publicly exposes Hubert for all his wrongdoings, which include his criminal activities. As a result, Hubert goes to prison.
Assane also used Hubert’s daughter, Juliette, against him. So, it makes sense that Hubert would want to use someone close to Assane to get revenge on him this time.
5. How Assane’s ending sets up Lupin Season 4?
At the end of Lupin season 3, Assane was apprehended and incarcerated. Despite this, Pellegrini’s reappearance suggests more to come in Assane’s tale. This indicates that there may be an even more captivating and epic pivotal chapter on the horizon.
Eventually, Assane will probably find a way out of confinement and into another cunning robbery in Lupin season 4. Initially, Assane must confront Pellegrini, who could hatch a plan to trick him by faking his mother’s abduction.
The pair have a lot to hash out, and Assane will likely spend the entirety of Lupin season 4 trying to one-up Pellegrini, who’s had time to focus on his revenge against Assane while in prison. If nothing else, Pellegrini’s reappearance suggests Assane is being played, and all is not as well as he thought.
This could bring him back to the drawing table, and Assane will have to again enact revenge on Pellegrini for messing with his life and using one of his parents. With the pieces in place, Lupin season 3’s ending sets up season 4 as a full-circle conclusion to Assane’s story.
