What happens at the end of Fargo Season 3?

The third season ends with a ticking clock, an increasingly dark interrogation room, and an enigmatic smile from Gloria.

The finale also saw several key Fargo characters meet unpleasant ends, some through vengeance and some through tragic happenstance. That’s just the Fargo way.

1. Does Dollard figure out Varga’s scam? Does Nikki die?

Fargo’s third season has a very cryptic ending. The finale is the strongest of the three seasons and ends season three on a very bright note. In a clever turn of events, Dollard, aptly named the one with a sharp eye, finally unravels Varga’s deceitful scheme and shares his findings with Gloria.

Meanwhile, Varga orchestrates a cunning plan to transfer the company ownership to Goldfarb, who is later revealed to be Varga’s criminal partner. Upon reaching his office, Emmit is blindsided by Goldfarb’s takeover. To retrieve his valuable hard disks, Varga meets with Nikki to exchange ransom money.

But to his shock, Nikki and Mr. Wrench are waiting to ambush him. Varga manages to escape, but not without consequences. Seeking vengeance for the death of Raymond, Nikki sets her sights on Emmit and lures him to a deserted road.

When a state trooper intervenes, the two kill each other in a Mexican-standoffish scene. A crying Emmit narrates the entire ordeal to his wife. The story jumps five years in the future, where we see Emmit’s family happy and well. He is shot by Mr. Wrench, who exacts revenge on Nikki’s death.

2. What is Mr. Wrench’s role in Season 3?

Meet Mr. Wrench, the infamous hitman from season 1 who was once paired with Adam Goldberg’s character, Mr. Numbers. He may have only appeared briefly as a young boy in season 2, but his role in tying together all three seasons of the series seems unimaginable.

Yet, in true Fargo fashion, where every detail is meticulously intertwined, Mr. Wrench is the ultimate link between them all, especially regarding the extensive crime network that stretches across the Midwest.

Mr. Wrench’s appearance in Fargo’s third season serves a deeper purpose than just connecting the three seasons. This significance is highlighted when Paul Marrane speaks to Nikki in a mystical bowling alley that seems to nod to The Big Lebowski.

Like the bowling alley, Paul shows up when the characters need him most. Despite being a criminal, Paul comes to the rescue and saves their lives. In a moment of generosity, he even provides a VW Beetle for their escape from a vengeful Yuri, allowing them to focus on their plans for revenge against Varga.

After the explosive showdown at the self-storage facility, Varga’s fate remained mysterious for years. It wasn’t until Mr. Wrench resurfaced in the Stussy kitchen that the path to Varga’s downfall was finally illuminated.

Emmit’s ultimate demise, while tragic, encapsulates the show’s message that evil deeds will inevitably be met with retribution.

However, what adds a layer of intrigue to Emmit’s fate is that it’s a reformed hitman from the criminal underworld who ultimately helps tip the cosmic scales back in balance.

Despite desperately trying to piece his family back together, it’s clear that Emmit’s efforts were not enough to escape the consequences of his actions.

3. Importance of Paul Marrane in the finale Explained

Sitting next to Ray Wise’s Paul Marrane on a flight from Minnesota to California is a fortunate seating arrangement and a guarantee for a smooth ride.

With his expertise in handling troublesome officers like Rob McElhenney, Paul ensures that God’s divine reckoning is delivered relatively. As seen in one particular event, he doesn’t hesitate to directly unleash it on unapologetic criminals like Yuri, who foolishly crossed his path.

In the series’ most overtly mystical sequence, Paul Marrane hints that the wildfire-like chaos of the season isn’t burning completely out of control; there are still forces around to help contain it.

In a sense, Paul recruits Nikki and Mr. Wrench to help mete out a little biblical justice, sending them on their way with vengeance on their minds.

Even though Paul is absent from the season finale, his impact on Gloria and Nikki’s actions is still felt heavily throughout the final hour.

The bowling alley sequence is a pivotal moment for the entire season, as it marks where Fargo returns to its core theme of justice prevailing against evil. Despite Varga and his cronies constantly defying the laws of society, the show ultimately suggests that their actions will not go unpunished, and morality will still prevail.

4. The final confrontation between Vanga and Gloria Explained

At the airport, Varga is detained and undergoes a tense interrogation from Gloria, who has now joined the Department of Homeland Security.

Gloria’s confident that she’s finally caught her man. At the same time, though, Varga’s secure the freedoms he’s enjoyed will continue to serve his interests rather than those in law enforcement. It’s an ambiguous ending that thematically props up the rest of the season, unlike Fargo years 1 and 2.

Their conversation is filled with weighty implications and veiled threats as they both hold their ground. But it’s Gloria’s uncertain yet unwavering smile that concludes this chapter. Despite the promises of closure, the finale leaves us with more enigmatic puzzles to unravel.
