One of the most significant aspects of Game of Thrones (the show) were Daenerys’ three dragons—Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. Their sheer existence stirred fear within the hearts of all her enemies, including Cersei.
In House of the Dragon, the Targaryen House would be a core part of the story; with them, the dragons would gain more prominence. So, here’s a quick recap of what exactly happened to Daenerys’ three dragons by the end of Game of Thrones Season 8.
Rhaegal and Viserion died in GoT, while Drogon survived and went to Volantis. Rhaegal died after Euron Greyjoy shot him with multiple bolts. Viserion turned into a White Walker after the Night King pierced him with his spear and later died during the Battle of Winterfell.
1. Rhaegal Gets Killed by Euron Greyjoy
Dragons were considered nearly invincible, and anyone who could tame them could rule the seven kingdoms. This has been the perception since before the events of Game of Thrones. Besides being powerful creatures, they also stand as a testament to the existence of magic.
Thus, anyone wielding magic can control mere mortals without much effort. Daenerys had the same mindset. But, this was shattered when she lost her first dragon, Rhaegal. Although Rhaegal was the second dragon to die, he was the first to fall before a human.
In Season 8 Episode 4, Daenerys is flying towards Dragonstone, where Euron Greyjoy’s fleet is waiting to welcome her, and boy, he does a good job of it. Even before the Targaryen Queen sees him, he’s able to shoot his first scorpion bolt into Rhaegal’s neck. After this, he shoots two more which hit their mark quite accurately, and the beloved dragon falls into the water
If you’re wondering that there should’ve been a bigger spectacle to depict the downfall of such a mighty creature, you’re right. However, considering how Season 8 rushed and ruined almost everything, we can see how it portrayed such a significant death in an overly simplistic way.
2. Viserion Falls Prey to the Night King
Viserion’s death was much more horrifying and palpable. When Jon Snow and his army are squaring off with the Night King beyond the walls, he knows that everything is at stake.
But none of us realized how powerful the Night King truly was. It’s that moment where he sets his cold and unforgiving eyes on the dragon flying across the grey sky. He calmly takes a spear from one of his commanders and shoots it toward Viserion as he’s burning everything and everyone he sees.
The spear pierces through the ferocious creature as he falls to the ground, and Daenerys knows what she has lost. As shocking as this scene was after the humans depart, the White Walkers are seen pulling a chain, and it dawns upon us as the viewers—Viserion is still not dead. He has now become a part of the Undead.
With the help of Viserion, the Night King pretty easily breaks The Wall and enters Winterfell. A battle ensues, and in the end, the Night King is killed by Arya Stark. Once he dies, all the White Walkers disintegrate, and so does Viserion.
3. Drogon Remains Alive at the End of Game of Thrones
Drogon is the only dragon alive at the end of Game of Thrones. He mourns the death of Daenerys, carries her, and flies away. While many speculated that he would go to Valyria, David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed that he went to Volantis. Volantis is the homeland of Targaryens, and it was only fitting that he took Daenerys there.
However, it still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Was Drogon the last dragon alive? Will he return?
4. Drogon Might Not Be the Last Dragon
Unlike in the books, the show didn’t focus too much on the intricacies of dragon reproduction. In the books, the creatures were known to be gender fluid, whereas, in the series, they were referred to as males.
House of the Dragon takes place about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and might answer this question better. Furthermore, if we look at the history of dragons, you’ll know that their eggs are very difficult to hatch.
So, there is a possibility that more dormant eggs could be hidden across the seven kingdoms, and Drogon might not be the last of his kind. However, we can only know for sure in the Jon Snow spinoff, which, unlike House of the Dragon, tells the tale after GoT’s events.
House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21, and hopefully, it doesn’t follow the legacy of Game of Thrones’ last season.
5. About House Of The Dragon
