Peacemaker episode 6 picked up right from where it left off in the previous episode, with Adebayo frozen in what she thought were her last moments.
The episode didn’t let me breathe even for a second. Every five minutes, there was a twist or a new reveal, and all of this set up the ending of the episode.
In the previous episode, we saw Adebayo plant a diary in Peacemaker’s trailer after the two celebrated their mini-victory at the plant. Amanda Waller ordered her to do so, and in this episode, we see Captain Locke get his hands on the diary.
While Murn thinks the situation is handled, Peacemaker’s world turns upside down when Locke reveals the contents of the diary and deems Peacemaker a psychopathic criminal who needs to be nabbed at any cost.
- What were the contents of the diary?
- Why did Captain Locke do that?
- What does the Peacemaker episode 6 ending mean?
Well, I might have a couple of theories that can set the stage for the final two episodes of Peacemaker season 1.
Peacemaker’s diary is likely to be a forged piece that portrays Peacemaker as a psychopath who imagined an alien invasion massacred several people over it.
Captain Locke, who got infected by the Queen Butterfly, announced this in a press conference.
This puts Peacemaker and Task Force X at a severe disadvantage since all the police officers in the department are now butterflies. The announcement by Captain Locke (A butterfly) in a press conference makes Peacemaker the nation’s biggest supervillain.
Furthermore, it also means that they can use any means necessary to annihilate Peacemaker and Task Force X, with no questions asked, since they are the designated officials.
But before I get to how this would set the stage for the next two episodes, let’s look at the episode and try to understand a few things, starting with Peacemaker’s Diary.
I have two theories around this diary, and while they may be wildly different, I feel the show might unfold develop along those lines.
Theory 1: Amanda Waller wanted To Frame Peacemaker
Amanda Waller is a person with no morals. She cares about her mission, and nothing else should stand in her way. I think Waller wanted Adebayo to place the forged diary in Peacemaker’s trailer to tie him to all crimes if things got messy.
The complete mission details about butterflies, their invasion plan, etc., are put down in the diary. This means if something went wrong, Amanda could simply lead officers to Peacemaker’s trailer, where they would find the diary and connect him to all the killings.
The move is a classic, and we’ve seen her try to pull off the same in ‘The Suicide Squad’ and Suicide Squad previously. So this would’ve been her backup safety mechanism to ensure that there are no loose ends at the end of the mission.
However, at the end of episode 6, the butterflies have made Peacemaker the scapegoat, tying him to all the killings. Captain Locke breaks out the overview of the mission but depicts it as a figment of Peacemaker’s imagination, making him look like a psychopathic killer.
Although he did kill all those people, the public wouldn’t know that they were all real butterfly aliens residing in human bodies.
In a twisted sense, this means that Amanda’s potential plan has come to fruition, but it also means that without Peacemaker, the mission to destroy all butterflies would become impossible.
Theory 2: Amanda Waller Placed The Diary For Peacemaker
An alternative theory could be that Amanda Waller planted the diary in Peacemaker’s trailer for him to read it.
Considering Amanda is always aware of everything and at all times, she might have placed a diary to warn Peacemaker of something that he doesn’t know.
This could mean that she’s aware of Murn being a butterfly and knew specific details that no one was telling him. So she made Adebayo plant a diary without giving her full context too.
However, when Captain Locke got his hands on the diary, either he switched it for a version that portrayed Peacemaker as a psychopath or just used the contents of the same diary to manipulate the narrative as he did at the end of episode 6.
I think the latter is more plausible since there would be significantly less time to make that switch, but again we’ll only know in the next two episodes.
While this theory is speculative, I feel we will see some elements from it in the upcoming episodes. This is because James Gunn’s suicide squad had that element of surprise towards the end. A reveal that turned the entire plot upside down.
Although we’ve seen plot twists such as these in various episodes, I think they are building up to something, and James Gunn is saving his best flip for the finale.
Things can turn in a million different directions, but to me, this seems like an opportunity where Peacemaker can come out as a hero if he saves the day.
While this is a perfectly happy ending that I don’t expect to see, I think it’d put Peacemaker in a better position to make a deal with Amanda. He could ask Waller to off his back, at least for the time being, take some time for himself and sort his past traumas to become a better person.
I guess we’ll know only next week how the episode unfolds. One thing is for sure, though. A shitstorm is coming, Peacemaker’s way, and he’s going to need all the help he can get to overcome the odds stacked against him.
