What Does The Matrix 4 “Resurrections” Title Really Mean?

At CinemaCon, the official title of Matrix 4 was revealed to be “Resurrections” — the rebirth of Neo and Trinity, the Machine stronghold and the franchise as a whole.

We received our first glimpse into the movie with an exclusive trailer at CinemaCon, where Neo relapses to the identity of Thomas Anderson from the previous movies in a state that’s still unaware of the Matrix’ existence.

Carrie-Anne Moss’s Trinity too appears to be in the same trance, although when the two meet, they cannot shake off the familiarity of each other’s presence.

The Matrix trilogy has always seemed to have a clear-cut path of where the story was supposed to begin and end. And end it did, with Neo sacrificing himself for humanity’s salvation. So how does he come back?

As one Reddit user puts it, it’s time to get biblical.

Neo’s “resurrection” will be in line with his messianic role, his title as “The Chosen One.” In fact, biblical allusions have been a massive part of the trilogy’s direction and imagery as well, including Neo’s death in the crucifixion pose.

Now three days, er, we mean almost two decades later “Resurrections” is a fitting title to explore the aftermath of the event.

Even then, Neo’s character is such that a resurrection is much more accessible than a human character like Trinity, for whom death is more of a permanent sentence.

Many believe that if Trinity is really back, (and our money is on that she is, given the plural form of resurrection) she may be the driving force of the new movie.

And of course, the trailer also gets us speculating that Morpheus is back as his younger self played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

But no story is complete without its antithetical forces. So what if, “Resurrections” points to the possibility of another Machine power-grab that has allowed them to be the reigning forces once again?

This makes a more compelling opener for Matrix 4, as it gives the trilogy a reason to expand its closed-off storyline.

A little on the nose, it is also the resurrection of the franchise, which once upon a time, creator Lana Wachowski was opposed to.

But fans have seen it all, both in the Matrix trilogy itself as well as in other franchises that have attempted reboots, revivals… resurrections, whatever you want to call it. Fans will need to be tickled pink to ensure a successful movie.

For The Matrix 4, its storyline and execution will determine whether it will be a new beginning or just its last hurrah.
