During their journeys through the Stargate in Stargate SG-1, the SGC met many alien races from different worlds with unique traits. Repeated encounters involved the Goa’uld and Jaffa, but occasional visitors also arrived. Some visitors proved harmful, while others offered help.
Overall, each group contributed something noteworthy.
Of course, not all the beings who lived on different planets in Stargate SG-1 were technically aliens. Many were humans whose ancestors had been taken from Earth by the villainous Goa’uld to serve as enslaved people across the galaxy.
22 A’t’trr
Homeworld: P4G-881
First seen in the initial stages of Stargate SG-1, the A’t’trr are minuscule organisms with a collective consciousness capable of seizing control of a living host.
They thrive on heat and oxygen and exhibit superior intelligence and advanced abilities. Their native world (P4G-881) became inhospitable, prompting them to preserve themselves in a cryogenic apparatus for centuries.
It was SG-1 who unknowingly transported this device back, releasing the A’t’trr inadvertently. Over time, this extraterrestrial species was introduced to a fresh planet they could call their own.
21 Ancients
Original Homeworld: Dakara
In the cosmos, the Ancients stand out as one of the most highly sophisticated civilizations, having a pivotal role in Stargate SG-1.
This progressive society developed high-level technologies, the likes of which our Earth had never witnessed before humans began to evolve, among which the Stargates stand prominent.
Though the Ancients were initially humanoid, they Ascended to a higher plane of existence and became formless—the tradeoff of infinite knowledge and power.
These entities, recognized as “Ancients,” were formerly known as Alterans, the forebears of the villainous Ori.
20 Asgard
Original Homeworld: Orilla
In Stargate SG-1, the Asgard are an advanced extraterrestrial species who, thankfully, became one of the Earth’s most trusted partners.
Like the Goa’uld, the Asgard visited Earth hundreds of years before Stargate began, permitting the earthlings to perceive them as divine beings (thus creating the basis of Norse mythology).
Their homeland is the celestial body dubbed Orilla, but their lineage extended across the cosmos due to their responsibility as its chief safeguard. Thor stands out prominently among the Asgard, forming a strong bond with Jack O’Neill.
19 Asuran
Homeworld: Asuras
The Asuran, sometimes referred to as the Replicators, were significant adversaries in the Stargate SG-1 series, causing trouble season after season.
The Ancients originally developed them as weapons to obliterate the Wraith, though they eventually spiraled out of control.
With their roots in Asuras, the Asurans started as minuscule nanite units that gradually evolved to resemble their humanoid inventors.
However, their inherent microscopic structure rendered them massively intrusive and exceptionally hard to eradicate. This evolution of the Asuran posed a considerable challenge for Earth and the SGC.
16 Enkaran
Homeworld: Ankara
Enkara is a world occupied by the Enkaran, humanoid figures from Stargate SG-1 who resemble Earth’s human population except for their distinctive yellow eyes.
The Enkaran belong to those extraterrestrial species that possess pretty basic technology, using wooden and metallic tools to support their wandering lifestyle.
Enkara’s ozone layer is multiple times denser than Earth’s, so these Stargate aliens display a considerable sensitivity to sunlight.
17 Furling
Homeworld: Heliopolis
The Furlings are never seen in Stargate SG-1, but they are discussed several times. They come from the planet Heliopolis and are thought to look similar to Earth’s koalas (though much larger).
The Furlings were part of the Alliance of Four Great Races with the Ancients, Asgards, and Noxs and are, therefore, among the good guys of Stargate.
Like their ally races, these beings were highly advanced and considered it their duty to help protect the galaxy.
16 Hankan
Homeworld: Hanka
Despite being originally from Earth, the Hankans were transported to planet Hanka and genetically modified to serve as superior physical vessels for the Goa’uld.
These modifications were the brainchild of Stargate SG-1’s System Lord Nirrti. However, due to fear of discovery, Nirrti annihilated almost all the Hankan.
The only one to escape this fate was a girl named Cassandra, who was dispatched to the SGC as a human explosive by Nirrti. Thankfully, disaster was averted, and Cassandra found a new home with Dr. Janet Fraiser from Stargate SG-1.
15 Jaffa
Homeworld: Dakara
In the Stargate SG-1 universe, the Jaffa play a critical role as a distinct humanoid species, with the most eminent example being Teal’c, an SG-1 team member.
Their lineage traces back to humans on Earth, who the Goa’uld genetically modified to function as hosts for their offspring.
Dakara serves as the primary dwelling for this race, but similar to the Goa’uld, they are spread across numerous planets within the galaxy depicted in Stargate SG-1.
They were explicitly conditioned to be the principal warriors for the Goa’uld, deemed expendable until they chose to liberate themselves and form the Free Jaffa Nation.
14 Goa’uld
Homeworld: P3X-888
In the universe of Stargate SG-1, the Goa’uld, a particularly cunning and dangerous alien species, undoubtedly takes the lead. This strange breed thrives by acquiring hosts, and humans, to their convenience, fit the bill perfectly.
The Goa’uld have showcased their advanced tech prowess by subjugating various civilizations on Earth throughout history. They occupied human bodies and persuaded them of their divine role.
Interestingly, “goa’uld” translates into “god” in the alien species’ language. They originate from P3X-888, the Goa’uld, as portrayed in several Stargate SG-1 episodes, commandeering considerable portions of the galaxy.
13 Gadmeer
Homeworld: P5S-381
Gadmeer, despite technically being extinct when SGC stumbled upon their civilization, held the potential to be revived eventually.
Known as a sulfur-based reptilian species with a knack for advanced technology, this alien race thrived before their homeland was taken over by adversaries.
Faced with this adversity, the Gadmeer stashed away their DNA on a spaceship, hoping it would find a new planet to sustain them. Their search concluded at P5S-381. Although Stargate SG-1 leaves out their exact fate, it is surmised that the Gadmeer accomplished their mission.
12 Neraida
Homeworld: PXY-887
Native to the celestial body PXY-887, the Neraida possess skills of shapeshifting and invisibility. This empowered them to stay undetected when the Goa’uld deposited human bondsmen on their world.
Observant of these beings, identified as the Salish, the Neraida grew to become their unseen guardians, and the Salish started to acknowledge them as “supernatural entities” that heeded their devotions.
During the instance when an SGC crew arrived on the planet for mining operations, conflict ignited between them and the Neraida, who were protective of the Salish.
However, SG-1 successfully negotiated peace with this extraterrestrial civilization, eventually fostering a bond of friendship.
11 Ohne
Homeworld: Oannes
Hailing from their homeworld of Oannes, the Ohne were an aquatic species and a natural enemy to the Goa’uld.
This race must spend at least three hours a day fully submerged in water or dehydrated, so they developed devices called hydration that enable them to travel the galaxy more.
Another notable fact about the Ohne is that they live very long lives (about 5,000 years) and have some seemingly magical abilities. Though they allied themselves with Earth, there were a few tense moments between the Ohne and SGC in Stargate SG-1.
10 Nox
Homeworld: Gaia
Stargate SG-1’s Nox is a unique alien race in the Four Great Races’ Alliance, including the Asgard, Furlings, and Ancients. These serene and whimsical beings hail from the celestial body, Gaia.
Despite their unassuming appearance in Stargate, they are an incredibly advanced civilization that designed their technology to coexist seamlessly with Gaia’s natural environment.
The Nox chose not to confront the Goa’uld militarily, yet they offered their frequent assistance to those who had suffered at the hands of this evil adversary.
9 Ori
Homeworld: Celestis
While in Stargate SG-1, exalted entities are often portrayed as enlightened and serene; the Ori shifted the narrative to a darker realm. Before their exaltation, these beings were known as the Alterans, hailing from Celestis.
Diverse ideologies sparked a divide among the Alterans, leading them to part into two factions, later recognized as the Ancients and the Ori.
The latter saw their exaltation as confirming their godhood, demanding veneration from mortals. Consequently, extreme repression and punishment awaited those who refused to submit.
8 Reetou
Homeworld: Reetalia
The Reetou are the advanced, insect-like race of Stargate SG-1 who call the planet Reetalia home. They can make themselves nearly invisible, which helps them maintain their peaceful and pacifistic status.
Unfortunately, the Goa’uld targeted them, feeling threatened by the Reetou’s invisibility.
After nearly being wiped out, the remaining members of this race split into two sides—those who wanted to fight the Goa’uld the old-fashioned way and those who believed that wiping out all potential human hosts was the only way.
7 Reol
Homeworld: Planet Name Unknown
In Stargate SG-1, the Reol represents an extraterrestrial species that naturally embraces peace. Despite their peaceful disposition, the Goa’uld singled them for their unique competencies.
These unique life forms can produce a certain chemical that, when contacted, induces faux memories in others, thereby bewildering their foes.
Alongside this, the Reol possesses swift healing capabilities. Aside from these abilities, these extraterrestrial beings are pretty vulnerable and unarmed, relying solely on the fabricated memories they produce to discourage foes from viewing them as a menace.
6 Kull
Homeworld: Tartarus
Anubis fashioned the Kull, humanesque entities, as a substitute for the Jaffa through intelligent genetic design. Birthed on the world of Tartarus, these Kull bore body covering armor, making them virtually indestructible.
Such protection ensured the safety of the internal residing Goa’uld symbiotes even during combat situations.
Compared to a typical Jaffa or human, the Kull exhibited superior strength, showed more excellent toughness, and could sustain on much less oxygen. Despite these attributes, the Kull were susceptible to organ breakdown, leading to their considerably brief life expectancy.
5 Serrakin
Homeworld: Hebridean
The Serrakin are a reptilian alien race who live in harmony on their home planet with a group of humans whom they had rescued from the Goa’uld thousands of years before the start of Stargate SG-1.
Over time, these two species began to interbreed, resulting in a society of more human-like Serrakin without scales. Though Earth’s initial interaction with these aliens was negative, they ultimately worked things out and became allies, fighting against the villainous Ori.
4 Unas
Homeworld: P3X-888
Before Earth’s humans were spotted by the Goa’uld, the Unas from P3X-888 served as their choice hosts. This gives proof of this race’s existence across various planets in the galaxy.
The Unas look reptilian and possess self-healing traits, though slower than when they act as hosts for the Goa’uld.
After being abandoned by the antagonists of Stargate SG-1, the Unas decided to ally with Earth’s humans, aptly joining forces with the new favored hosts of the Goa’uld to battle against them.
3 Tok’ra
Homeworld: Planet Name Unknown
Although reminiscent of the Goa’uld, the Tok’ra dislike being confused with the adversaries from Stargate SG-1. As symbiotic aliens, they, too, necessitate host beings for survival but make a conscious choice for coexistence.
The minds of the human host and the Tok’ra equally command their shared physical forms when desired, fostering a profoundly close and harmonious bond.
Filled with empathy and a resilient spirit to fight against the Goa’uld, the Tok’ra formed a strategic alliance with Earth and the SGC over time.
2 Unity
Homeworld: P3X-562
The Unity is a race of crystal-like lifeforms from the planet P3X-562. When touched, they cause pain, unconsciousness, and sometimes death, which causes the Goa’uld to wipe them out nearly.
However, some Unity survived to be discovered by SG-1 and brought back to the SGC.
It’s ultimately clear in Stargate SG-1 that these beings can also possess a human body, which they did to Jack O’Neill to understand his emotional pain. Once the SGC sorted this out, the Unity became allies to Earth.
1 The Wraith
Homeworld: Unknown Planet In The Pegasus Galaxy
Perhaps the most disturbing alien race of Stargate SG-1 (and its spinoff series) are the Wraith, humanoid beings from the Pegasus galaxy.
The Wraith farm and harvest humans, feeding on their live-force when needed. These villains travel from world to world in the Pegasus galaxy, leading these planets in a constant state of terror as they wait for the year the Wraith will return.
Though this alien race was predominantly featured in Stargate Atlantis, they were first introduced in Stargate SG-1, where they were a primary villain of the Ancients and thus the origin of much of the galaxy’s conflicts.
