All Attributes in New World and How they Work; Explained!

In order to be successful in the magical island of Aeternum, players must have an astute understanding of the five Attributes of New World. Each Attribute, with its own set of pros and cons, will contribute to your character’s core strength and influence your progression.

The five core attributes in New World are Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Focus, and Constitution.

Players start the game with 5 points in each Attribute. These can be leveled up by allocating the stat points you receive after reaching a new character level or by equipping specific gear to obtain Attribute bonuses.

It must be kept in mind that leveling up will provide you with 190 Attribute points. Later, when you get to the level cap, attribute points are acquired from gear only.

Moreover, you must ensure that the Attribute you’re investing in is compatible with your weapons. They both go hand in hand, and upon failing to do so, the potency of your character can be severely hindered.

Reaching new Attribute levels by assigning points to them will also help you reap the benefits of 6 threshold bonuses.

1. Strength

Strength has an influence over the power of your melee attacks and scales damage of the following weapons:

  • Great Axe (Strength)
  • War Hammer (Strength)
  • Hatchet (Strength and Dexterity)
  • Sword (Strength and Dexterity)
  • Spear (Strength and Dexterity)

The damage of heavy melee weapons like Great Axe and War Hammer is increased solely by Strength, but other armaments like Hatchet, Sword, and Spear rely slightly on Dexterity as well besides Strength.

I. Threshold Bonuses

  • 50 Strength: +15% damage to light melee attacks; +10% mining speed
  • 100 Strength: +20% damage to heavy melee attacks; +20 encumbrance
  • 150 Strength: +50% stamina damage from melee light and heavy attacks; -10% decrease in weight of mined items
  • 200 Strength: +20% damage on dazed, slowed, or rooted enemies; +10% mining speed
  • 250 Strength: Stamina keeps regenerating during melee attacks; +10% mining yield increase
  • 300 Strength: Melee attacks gain Grit; 25% chance to mine ore with just one swing

2. Dexterity

Strength has an influence over the power of your ranged attacks and scales damage of the following weapons:

  • Bow (Dexterity only)
  • Rapier (Dexterity and Intelligence)
  • Musket (Dexterity and Intelligence)
  • Spear (Strength and Dexterity)
  • Hatchet (Strength and Dexterity)
  • Sword (Strength and Dexterity)

While a Bow only needs Dexterity, other weapons like Rapier and Musket need Intelligence as well to improve damage. Light melee weapons, on the other hand, are faintly dependent on Strength as well.

I. Threshold Bonuses

  • 50 Dexterity: Gaining +10% chance to critical hit; +10% increase to skinning speed
  • 100 Dexterity: +5% piercing damage; +20% haste for 3 seconds after skinning
  • 150 Dexterity: Dodging will cost 10 less stamina; -10% drop in weight of skinned items
  • 200 Dexterity: +20% bonus backstab and headshot damage; +10% skinning speed
  • 250 Dexterity: Gaining a +30% bonus to critical damage on stunned, slowed, or rooted enemies; +10% skinning yield increase
  • 300 Dexterity: Assured critical hit after dodge roll; ammo has 15% chance of being returned

3. Intelligence

Intelligence has an influence over the power of and scales damage of the following magic weapons:

  • Fire Staff (Intelligence only)
  • Ice Gauntlet (Intelligence only)
  • Rapier (Intelligence and Dexterity)
  • Musket (Intelligence and Dexterity)
  • Void Gauntlet (Intelligence and Focus)

Only a pure magical weapon like Fire Staff and Ice Gauntlet sees a rise in power through Intelligence only as other weapons like Rapier and Musket need other Attributes to improve.

I. Threshold Bonuses

  • 50 Intelligence: +10% damage to light and heavy magic attacks; +10% rise in harvest speed
  • 100 Intelligence: +20% critical damage; +5%  rise in chance for 1 Azoth when harvesting

  • 300 Intelligence: +30% damage on first hit on full health target; -10% reduction in Azoth fast travel cost

4. Focus

Focus has an influence over your Mana recovery rate and healing. It empowers the following weapons:

  • Life Staff (Focus only)
  • Void Gauntlet (Focus and Intelligence)

I. Threshold Bonuses

  • 50 Focus: +10% rise in mana regeneration rate; +10% fishing line tension
  • 100 Focus: +20 rise to mana pool; +10%  rise in salvaging yield

I. Threshold Bonuses

  • 50 Constitution: All health consumables get stronger by 20%; +10% logging speed
  • 100 Constitution: Increase max health by 10% of physical armor; -10% decrease on durability loss for tools
  • 150 Constitution: -20% decrease in critical damage taken; -10% drop in weight of logging gear
  • 200 Constitution: +20% increase to armor; +10% logging speed
  • 250 Constitution: -80% damage reduction when at full health (60s cooldown); +10% logging yield increase
  • 300 Constitution: +30 gain in duration of stun, slow, and root spells; 25% chance to chop down a tree in a single swing

6. Best Stat for Tank Build in New World

Great Axe

Tanks will call for Constitution the most, so allocate most of your points to this Attribute. Improved overall health, along with a variety of perks, will do you a world of good for this responsibility of being an attention-seeker.

At the same time, it would be a good idea to assign at least 50 points to Strength to enhance the damage of your War Hammer and Great Ax.

7. Best Stat for Ranged DPS Build in New World

Bow

When it comes to Ranged DPS builds, you should opt for a medium armor and invest in Dexterity primarily as it involves speed and agility.

Now for your secondary armament, it’s ideal to utilize a Spear or Rapier as your auxiliary weapon since they also depend on Dexterity. But if you want to pair up Hatchet with a Sword (secondary weapon), you will have to spend about 50 points on Strength and sacrifice Dexterity in return.

8. Best Stat for Melee DPS Build in New World

Sword and Shield

Dedicate most of your Attribute points to Strength for Melee DPS Builds so you are capable of inflicting the most severe raw damage. But, at the same time, Dexterity cannot be ignored as many melee weapons correspond to it. So, which Attribute you want to overpower depends entirely on you.

No matter what your decision, it’s wise to invest 50 points at the very least in Constitution and wear heavy armor to absorb strong hits and you’ll be golden.

9. Best Stat for Magic Build in New World

The Shaman

It is best to prioritize Intelligence to become the greatest mage Aeternum has ever seen! All you have to do is rely on the Fire Staff (Primary) and Ice Gauntlet (Secondary) combo, a medium armor, and you’ll be blasting foes away from a safe distance.

If you do not solely want to rely on the magic, then employ a melee weapon as your secondary weapon to block or do thurst/slash attacks, making it a Battle Mage class.

10. Best Stat for Healer Build in New World

Life Staff

So you want to protect your team members and heal them whenever they are down? You’re the perfect fit for the role of a Healer.

For this build, it’s best to make Focus your main Attribute and Intellect secondary. A medium armor will be ideal for this class which you should pair up with a novice ranged DPS like Ice Gauntlet.

You can also add Amber and Diamond gemstones to your life staff for the best results.

Now, what if you commit to an attribute you end up disliking later on and want to rebuild your character? Does New World allow you to mix things up so you can give different stat and weapon combinations a shot? The answer to this question is yes, thanks to a feature called respec.

11. How to Change Attributes in New World?

To respec attributes in New World, open the Character Menu by pressing K and Select Attributes. At the bottom of your screen, you will find the Respec button. Click on it, and you will be able to reallocate every skill point you’ve earned so far in your journey!

It must be kept in mind that if you are below level 20, Attribute Respec will be free. Unfortunately, after this level, you will have to shell out gold coins to have your skill points refunded, and the amount will vary according to your level.
