Jon Snow is one of the most celebrated characters in Game of Thrones. He went on from being a bastard and the man who knows nothing to the true king that people deserved but didn’t get. But what exactly are his powers? Let’s find out.
Jon Snow is an incredible swordsman, skilled fighter, and dragon rider. He is not immune to fire and does not have dragon blood in him. However, he is a Targaryen, and that is why he can ride a dragon.
Jon Snow Gets Burnt by Fire and Doesn’t Possess Dragon Blood
Despite being a Targaryen, Jon Snow does get burnt by fire, which means he doesn’t have dragon blood in him. This can be seen in Season 1 Episode 8. Jon Snow fought with a wight to protect Lord Mormont. In one instance, he threw a lamp at his adversary but, in the process, got burnt by fire.
Now, you might be wondering why this happened despite him being a Targaryen. If you look at the lore of GOT, and have read the books, you’ll know that Targaryens can die because of fire. Before the events of GOT, the Mad King was defeated by Robert Baratheon. In that battle/war, many Targaryens died due to fire.
However, it’s not that Targaryen blood doesn’t have any significance. People from this house have higher heat resistance but aren’t entirely invulnerable to it. Another instance that proves this is Viserys’ death.
After he insults and threatens to kill Daenerys, Khal Drogo pours molten gold on his head, and he dies almost instantly. This shows that he wasn’t immune to fire/heat either.
George R. R. Martin had also confirmed this while interacting with his fans on one occasion. He said that Targaryens are not immune to fire, and in the books, even Daenerys isn’t fireproof. Her surviving the incident where she was burnt alive was merely a miracle.
There are a lot of differences between the books and the show, and this is one of the most significant ones. In the show, the Dragon Queen is completely immune to fire, whereas in the books, she’s not. On the other hand, even Jon Snow’s powers in the books differ from that of the show.
Jon Snow’s Powers in the Books
Jon Snow is a natural skinchanger/warg who can warg into his direwolf, Ghost. He also has the supernatural power of getting prophetic dreams. However, these abilities are not trained, and this potential remains untapped throughout the books.
In fact, Jon Snow doesn’t realize that his dreams are premonitions until after the incident has occurred. Furthermore, his warging abilities are nowhere close to Bran’s and remain in a nascent stage.
While neither of these traits made it to the show, we might see something similar in House of the Dragon. Considering that there would be Starks in the prequel, they might possess these abilities, and a logical arc would be to depict how they faded away with generations.
