The world of shinobi in Naruto and Boruto use ninjutsu — techniques or spells used by channelling chakra. The association of ninjutsu with this franchise is strong.
So strong that one of the ninjutsu techniques becomes a marker to identity Naruto and Boruto characters. Now, what might this technique be? It is the Dojutsu or Eye Technique.
Naruto has already introduced the audience to a set of Dojutsu techniques yet Boruto’s right eye stumps them. So we’re here to deconstruct what Boruto’s eye is.
1. Quick Answer
The eye that Boruto possesses is known as the Jougan.
Although it has not been explicitly mentioned in the anime but the translation of a manga panel indicates so.
The Jougan allows him to sense and see chakra, its pathway system and also, view the invisible barriers between different dimensions. It is known as the “Pure Eye”.
2. Boruto’s Dojutsu
Boruto’s eye power is not officially called the Jougan in the anime yet Chengxi Huang, an animator of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations had released a picture of Boruto on his blog with a text that said Jougan.
I. What is Jougan?
Jougan translates to Pure Eye. The animator clarified that the Boruto’s eye was neither a Byakugan nor a Tenseigan.
He mentioned that it is linked to the Otsutski clan’s dimension. The Jougan is a unique Dojutsu whose powers are only known to the Otsutski clan.
The members of the clan claim that it’s troublesome and it’s a power inherited from the clan.
II. Jougan’s Appearance
This Dojutsu is blue in colour with black sclera and halo around the pupil.
Fans have noticed the strong similarities between Toneri’s Tenseigan and the Jougan appearance-wise. The audience was introduced to the Boruto anime, with Boruto already having moderate control of the eye.
III. Jougan’s Powers
The activation of the eye in Boruto had taken place at a much younger age which provokes questions of its origin. In its earlier stages, the activation would take place involuntarily especially when Boruto would fixate on a particular person or object.
The origins and true power of the Jougan have not been revealed but fans already have theories constructed around it. The Jougan grants three kinds of powers that are known.
One is the ability to see and sense chakras that include Dark Chakra. The ability is self-activated, especially around dangerous elements. Boruto hasn’t gained full control of it yet.
The second ability is to see the Chakra pathway system which is a derivation of Byakugan’s power yet it has a vantage point over Byakugan as Boruto can even spot the vital Chakra points.
Finally, Boruto can see invisible barriers connecting different dimensions. It was seen that he can also influence the dimensional portal during the encounter with his classmate Sumire Kakei.
4. Toneri & Tenseigan
Toneri Otsutski is the descendant of Hamura Otsutsuki and the sole survivor of the Otsutski branch on the moon. He was the main antagonist for “The Last: Naruto the movie.”
Toneri Otsutski awakened his Tenseigan after stealing the Byakugan from Hanabi Hyuga — affirming the Byakugan as a prerequisite for Tenseigan. The Tenseigan was originally manifested in Hamura Otsutsuki.
It is called the Reincarnation Eye and appears similar to the Jougan. Not much is known about the Tenseigan but it is said that Hamura used the Tenseigan to bring peace to his people.
Toneri’s goal in The Last Naruto the Movie was to bring ‘salvation’ to mankind. He bore immense hatred towards the weaponizing of chakra by mankind.
Much of what is known regarding its power is that it’s similar to the Six Paths Sage Mode and possesses the kinetic power like in Rinnegan. Unlike Naruto, Toneri emits a green aura while using his powers.
5. Origin of the Pure Eye
In episode 8 of Boruto, we see the return of Toneri Otsutski from The Last Naruto the Movie. Strangely, he does not make a return in corporeal form but as a messenger in Boruto’s dreams.
Toneri calls his eye the ‘Star of Hope’ and claims that the power of hope resides within him and will go against the destruction that is yet to come. During this, Toneri refers to Boruto’s eye as the Jougan or Pure Eye.
On the basis of this information and the origins of Toneri, people believe that Jougan is the result of a Dojutsu from the Byakugan-Tenseigan line.
People even believe that Toneri himself bestowed this eye on Boruto in The Last Naruto the Movie, probably in an attempt to carry his legacy. Another major theory regarding the origins of the eye is that of natural manifestation.
People claim that the Jougan was the manifestation of Hinata and Naruto’s chakra within Boruto. This aligns with the anime’s hints that Boruto’s eye is the result of biology and nothing else.
In The Last Naruto, Hinata is referred to as the Hyuuga Princess and receives chakra directly from Hamura which later on helps to disable Toneri. Naruto received Hamura’s twin brother’s chakra Hagoromo in the Fourth Shinobi World War. These two chakras combined resulted in the sealing away of evil incarnated — Kaguya Otsutsuki.
Kaguya fell into the depths of evil using chakra and her two sons were forced to seal her evil away. It shows that her sons used their chakras for good and purified the evil.
Therefore, it is not crazy to assume that Boruto’s eye, which is literally called the Pure Eye, is destined to purify evil and the impending doom that awaits the world.
6. Other Dojutsus
Other than the Jougan and Tenseigan, there are Three Great Dojutsus : Byakugan, Sharingan and Rinnegan.
The Byakugan or the White Eye is a Dojutsu inherited by the Hyuuga Clan. The Otsutsuki clan also possess this dojutsu which they inherited from Kaguya Otsutski.
The Dojutsu grants abilities of a 360° vision and the ability to see chakra flow in another person. It’s also known as the All-Seeing White Eye.
The Sharingan or the Mirror Wheel Eye is a dojutsu that is unique to the Uchiha clan. It was used by Kaguya Otsutski and inherited from her grandson Indra Otsutski.
The Sharingan is quite a complicated dojutsu with variations and different abilities. There is the Mangekyo Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and the basic Sharingan.
The basic Sharingan allows the user to read the opponent’s movements and also copy it at the same pace.
In Genjutsu, it has two forms: Izanagi and Izanami. Izanagi is the ability to bend reality for a while whereas Izanami is a preventive measure which takes away the user’s eye and puts the opponent in an illusion of loop where the opponent is forced to realize his faults to break free.
The Rinnegan or the Samsara Eye comes from Kaguya’s Rinne Sharingan and was inherited by her son Hagoromo Otsutsuki.
The Rinnegan has the Six Paths abilities and can only be awakened by the chakra of Indra and Asura present in the body.
