After the shocking mid-season twist of Westworld Season 4, the show’s co-creator Lisa Joy has shared what comes next for this season’s story.
The dystopian sci-fi drama TV series has already made its place as one of the top-watched series of all time on HBO. But following the viewership stumbles of Season 3, the current one is proving why it was labeled as one of the best.
Westworld is based on Michael Crichton’s film in 1973, also titled Westworld, following the story in technologically advanced Wild-West-themed amusement parks open to the public, populated by androids that look like humans. All should have gone well for the wealthy patrons of the parks—except nothing did when the androids malfunctioned and began killing everyone.
The show stars Thandiwe Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Aaron Paul, Simon Quarterman, Tessa Thompson, and Jeffrey Wright. The series has undergone three seasons of storytelling, and a fourth season is halfway done.
Season 4 takes place seven years after the events of Season 3, and the first four episodes were focusing on three major plotlines. Caleb (Aaron Paul) and Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) uncover details of the latest season’s new park, The Golden Age Park, while Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) moves forward on his quest to save the world and Christina begins life as a writer.
The viewers were led to believe that all these events were taking place simultaneously—until the writers flipped their theories upside down with a shocking reveal.
Caleb and Maeve had died 23 years ago, and Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) had completed her plan of trapping humanity in a cage with parasitic flies. The rebel C (Aurora Perrineau) was Caleb’s daughter, who had been stuck in a fidelity cycle as Hale’s subject, and the body discovered by Bernard, C, and Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) was Maeve’s.
Of course, this tool of mystery and sudden reveals has been used by Westworld previously, but this one had viewers speechless and blind-sighted, proving it to be the best twist up till now.
In an interview with The Wrap, Westworld’s co-creator Lisa Joy shares that the upcoming episode will be “pretty fun” following the midseason twist.
Now that we know that Hale has won and the humans have been subjugated by this new A.I. power structure, I think we have to see how the fight for free will — this time waged by humans against robots — plays out. And it’s pretty fun. You see all of our actors doing what they do best, kicking ass and exploring their lives and the realities around them.
Humanity’s rebellion and fight for free will continue to get even more dangerous as per promises made. Viewer cans expect a reunion between C and Caleb, C being the key to turning over the rebellion for the benefit of humanity, and Christina’s role in Season 4. James Marsden will also be rejoining the cast for Season 4, though we don’t know what role he will play.
