In April 2023, a short six months since its season 1 premiere, Wednesday was renewed for season 2. While the creators gave us a fresh version of the Addams family’s daughter by choosing Jenna Ortega to play her, something was missing from the first season. They’ve heard the fans’ feedback on the matter and are working on it already.
Following season 1, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar plan to dive deeper into the titular character’s Latinx side.Speaking with Indiewire, they explained how lucky they were to have Jenna, a member of the Latinx community herself, to play the character, boosting authenticity points.
They also added that they want to add more elements of Latinx representation in season 2, showing how Wednesday grew up in New Jersey with a Latino parent, Gomez. So you can expect Ortega to highlight her Latina side in her performance in the upcoming installment of the Netflix show. Read their complete statement below:
It’s so rare to find an iconic [Latina] character of this stature. We really try to find ways to [highlight that] authentically. What would Wednesday listen to when she was growing up? What would Gomez be playing? And finding moments where we could really make it feel like a girl who’s grown up in New Jersey with a Latino parent, and how would that resonate with her as a teen? Certainly, this season we’re looking for more ways to explore that.
The lack of representation, or better said, non-stereotypical representation, was a downside to the otherwise popular show. Not only did the show only have two Black characters, but both were also bullies, feeding into a long and infamous cliche. The show can expand its cast and tweak its story to include more accurate representation.
Enid and Wednesday’s easy chemistry also has fans clamoring for a romantic relationship between the two roommates, so that could be a plus point in the LGBT+ representation. With this change, the creators would be killing two birds with one stone since Wednesday being stuck in a love triangle didn’t sit well – not even with the star herself.
What else do you expect from season 2 of Wednesday? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to Cine Dope for more news on the upcoming season of the Netflix horror.
