Michael Weatherly explains one critical misconception regarding the upcoming NCIS spinoff about Tony and Ziva.
NCIS boasts the status of CBS’ longest-running scripted series and the most-watched drama on TV. Therefore, the NCIS franchise is expanding itself with new spinoffs.
NCIS: Sydney premiered recently, while NCIS: Origins was also announced. The latter will focus on Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early days in the agency. Finally, another NCIS spinoff about Ziva Davis and Tony Dinozzo, a popular couple from the series, is in the works.
In a recent Instagram post, Weatherly revealed new information about the Tony and Ziva spinoff and corrected an important detail that was reported wrong in the media.
As per Weatherly, unlike the other shows in the NCIS franchise, the Tony and Ziva spinoff will air on Paramount+. He mentions that the cast will shoot at locations in Europe, and the title of the series is currently a secret. Early reports suggested the series would be called NCIS: Europe, but Weatherly denied such reports.
Weatherly recently returned to the NCIS franchise after almost a decade of his departure for the NCIS’ Ducky tribute episode. He made a brief cameo appearance and did not interact with the current NCIS roster.
Weatherly’s appearance is reportedly only the beginning of his return. In a conversation with Jimmy Palmer, he said that he was “passing through,” as Tony and Ziva will now be on the run in their own story.
Tony and Ziva will begin their new journey along with their daughter, Tali. The show will also reveal whether the couple is having any issues on their part. As a Mossad agent, Ziva is aware of how her past can affect her present. She even faked her death to deal with it.
Production for the spinoff is yet to begin later this year. We can expect more solid information about the show by then. CBS could use NCIS season 21 to set the stage for the spinoff. If we’re lucky, a cameo by the couple could also be on the cards.
