Doors often signify new beginnings and closures, but Makoto Shinkai has taken it to another level with Suzume no Tojimari.
The film is, quite literally, about closing magical doors called ‘Doors of Disaster’ that have appeared all over Japan. These gates unleash various sorts of catastrophe, and only Suzume, who opened the initial door, can close them.
Since it’s a Shinkai film, Suzume no Tojimari will be full of mesmerizing visuals and equally melodious soundtrack. Its latest English-subtitled trailer is solid proof of that.
The film is all prepared for its Japanese theatrical debut on November 11, 2022, and Crunchyroll will release it globally in 2023.
To get the full experience, you’ll have to watch the trailer at least four times. First for the graphics, then for the music, another view for the content, and a final look to blend the first three.
As expected, the scenery is one that you can easily get lost in. Shinkai’s signature animation with intricate details is just so satisfying and magical to watch.
Although the theme song isn’t revealed yet, the trailer confirms that it’s another track to put on loop. None of us are over Nandemonaiya, so what do you expect?
Finally, the story. The trailer teases a world beyond the first door that Suzume opened.
She describes it as a ‘space where it seemed all time had melted together.’ Suzume perfectly describes the magical realm where the sky looked like a hypnotizing mix of a starry night sky and a bright sunny day.
Do you think characters from Shinkai’s previous films will make any cameos as Mitsuha and Taki did in Weathering With You?
Speaking of Mitsuha, did you catch the Your Name reference in the trailer? If you did, let me know!
