Hulu released a commentary cut of their record-breaking sci-fi slash rom-com film, Palm Springs, on their streaming service, as a call back to the DVD era. The cut features the two leads, Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, along with the directorMax Barbakow and screenwriter Andy Siara.
The full cast and filmmakers’ commentary cut of Palm Springs is the first of its kind on a streaming platform–something that was never done before in the streaming era.
“As far as I know we’re the first. We realized that ‘Palm Springs’ will always be on Hulu, which is great, but there are elements of the DVD experience that just don’t exist anymore. They were very amenable in talking about ways to get some fun stuff in there,”
Andy Samberg told Variety
Palm Springs had broken viewership records of its streaming services in the opening week, making it one of the best films in 2020. At last year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film sold for a whopping $17.5 million (and 0.69 cents). It was one of the top films in 2020.
The move to release a commentary cut is smart, if anything, since the award season is round the corner, and adding extras for a film is a great way to attract more viewers and make the past viewers watch the film again.
Viewers can find the commentary version of Palm Springs under the “extras” tab on Hulu. It features the leads and filmmakers in a video conferencing style, as they talk about each scene in detail and give their inputs on the head-scratcher of an ending.
“Here’s the ending. No one knows what it means. There’s certain things in this movie that are not meant to be known with certainty.” Samberg commented about the film’s finale.
“I have my own opinions [on the ending], and I would never share them,” Milioti added.

The ending still remains a mystery, but at least we can be assured that we aren’t the only ones who couldn’t make sense of it.
The film revolves around Samberg’s character, who is a drunk wedding guest, stuck in a never-ending time loop for longer than he could remember, while Milioti accidentally joins Samberg in his time looping life. Palm Springs is available for streaming on Hulu.
