Who was Avatar?
Set in the world of ‘benders’ -– people who can bend or control one of the four elements Air, Water, Fire or Earth -– Avatar is a coming of age story of Aang.
Aang is the last surviving Airbender from the great purge carried out by the firebenders. The genocide was aimed at ending the Air Nation because the next Avatar was prophesied to be born as an Airbender.
Avatars are the benders with special ability to control all four elements, unlike the rest of them, who can only control one. As an Avatar, Aang is the only one who can stop the Fire Nation from world domination, making him Unwanted No. 1.
Stuck in a giant iceberg since the extermination, Aang is rescued by two siblings from the Water Nation. He now has to teach himself how to control the elements without any help from his fellow airbenders. If he succeeds, he will be save the world.
The show was renowned for its handling of complex themes concepts like autocracy and world domination – an anomaly among its counterparts. The Netflix premiere is bound to bring in many more fans into its fold and be a treat for those who grew up with the benders!
Live-action in the making
Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar is also set to be adapted in a live-action film, to be produced under the Netflix aegis. If you were wondering how long the show will be around on the platform, it’ll likely be there a while.
Given the coronavirus lockdown is likely to remain in place for months to come, as was recently confirmed by the WHO, the end of the great Hollywood production hiatus is nowhere close.
If only we too had an Avatar of our own, who could fight this battle against the coronavirus for us!
