WandaVision is the first title in the fourth phase of the MCU. It also marks the first Marvel series on Disney+ Hotstar, after it’s worldwide released on January 15, 2021, on the streaming service.
The series seems inventive, and it is not your typical marvel series. The show lacked any sort of action in the premiere episodes, but it looks like we’re just getting started on a wild journey.
Of course, no Marvel project is complete without a bad buy messing things up for the superheroes to clean. And looks like WandaVision has gotten itself a baddie–a supervillain at that.
The Bewitched inspired opening credit scene of episode 2 has a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment at 3:27, where the Marvel supervillain, Grim Reaper, is teased.
Also, at the end of the episode, a creepy guy surrounded by bees crawls out of a pothole. (Which is most likely Swarm, the Spiderman villain. I’ll talk more about this later).
But before I get into details,
Episode 2 of WandaVision is set in the 1960s, in the Bewitched sitcom era. The episode is filled with Easter eggs and subtle clues about the show, which are bewildering if you’ve caught on.
For those who have not, let me help you. In the Bewitched inspired animated opening credit scene, exactly at 3:27, the supervillain, Grim Reaper (or Eric Williams), receives a shout-out.
The reference is so subtle that we would have almost missed it. But there are fans with X-ray eyes (not literally, but you know what I mean) who caught the obvious clue.
As pointed out by the Twitter user @maxxw_, at 3:27, when Vision is phasing out of the roof of his house, a helmet of the sort appears in the space below the house.
Upon closer inspection, the helmet appears to be the one worn by Grim Reaper from Marvel Comics. The resemblance is so undeniable that it is rather apparent. Check out the tweet below:
But then,
1. Who is This Grim Reaper?
If the comics are to be believed, the arrival of Grim Reaper screams trouble for every Marvel superhero.
Grim Reaper (originally named Eric Williams) first appeared in the 1968 comic Avengers #52. He began his career as a criminal from a small crime syndicate, Maggia. But then his brother Simon got killed in an evil scheme to take the Avengers down.
Long story short, Eric blamed Simon’s death on the Avengers and swore to take vengeance. His right arm got amputated, and he replaced the arm with a scythe, which he had gotten from the Tinkerer.
The scythe is capable of spinning at an alarmingly high speed, allowing it to be used as a shield, a buzzsaw, and a make-do helicopter. The scythe could also shoot knock-out gas pellets and energy blasts. It also had a stunner, which could induce coma or kill.
2. How is the Grim Reaper Connected to Wanda and Vision?
Grim Reaper has a long history of shared interactions with Vision. When he attacks the Avengers with his team, the Lethal Legion, he found himself unable to kill Vision because he realized that Vision had the same brain wave patterns as his brother Simon.
He took a liking to Vision and offered to transfer Vision’s mind into his brother’s deceased body, which Vision had (obviously) refused.
Grim Reaper’s role in WandaVision’s plot is unclear as of yet. The only thing that comes to mind is that he wants to retry getting Vision to agree to his plans of performing necromancy.
3. Were There More Grim Reaper References?
The answer to this will be yes. Another Twitter user, @TWDeadDaily, pointed out that a broach or pendant worn by Agnes, the neighbor, had a Grim Reaper with a scythe on it. Check it out below:
This is probably enough to know that the Grim Reaper will sooner or later make an appearance on WandaVision.
4. Who Crawled Out of the Drainhole in Episode 2?
At the end of episode 2, a creepy figure wearing a suit of sorts, surrounded by bees, is seen crawling out of a drain hole.
However, just before anything could happen, Wanda rewinds the reality and changes the flow, indicating her blatant refusal to accept anything that’s not going towards a happily ever after.
The guy with the bees can be speculated to be Swarm, the villain from the Spider-verse. He was originally called Fritz Von Meyer and was a bee expert and one of Hitler’s top scientists (ha).
When he escaped to South America after the war, he discovered a swarm of mutant bees. Given his obsession, he tried to enslave the Queen bee but failed. As a result, he was eaten alive by the hive.
But since the bees were mutant species, Fritz’s consciousness got incorporated into the bees, which let him control them. He then called himself Swarm and became a supervillain.
As to what his role in the series might be, nothing is certain as of yet. Well, looks like there is a lot of waiting for us to do.
We will let you know more about this when new episodes are released. Stay tuned.
