WandaVision season finale, which aired yesterday, left a number of loose ends. The post-credits scene, which teased some major what’s-to-come in the future, has really captured the fans’ interest. One of them concerned Monica Rambeau meeting up with a person sent by “an old friend to her mother.”
The unnamed agent played by Lori Livingston reveals her identity as a Skrull. This could only mean one thing; Nick Fury is about to make a comeback!
Even though the agent doesn’t mention who she was dispatched by, it would make sense as Monica’s mother, Maria, worked closely with Fury in Captain Marvel. They were the duo who worked alongside Carol Danvers and helped protect the Skrulls against the Kree.
Not only does this cement the “old friend” distinction, but the Skrull agent’s identity also confirms that Monica will indeed meet Fury sometime in the future. Upon asking where she is to meet this “friend,” the agent points upwards towards the sky, revealing another exciting bit that Monica could be traveling to space to meet the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director.
This could also hint at Rambeau joining the real S.W.O.R.D. The subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was featured in WandaVision, took a turn for the worse, with corrupted Acting Director Tyler Hayward focusing the organization’s interest on weapons. However, there is hope that Fury’s S.W.O.R.D., which was created to protect Earth from extraterrestrial attacks, could uphold its original values.
Rambeau, the newcomer to the franchise, became an important character in WandaVision, with many hoping her narrative would be given more importance. With powers of her own that she develops throughout the series, Rambeau was confirmed to appear in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2.
This sets the stage for Rambeau’s ascension to the role of Captain Marvel, as appears in the comics. A younger Monica who appears in the 2019 Captain Marvel and becomes close to Carol Danvers would be perfect for the next leader of the Avengers.
