‘WandaVision’ Episode 6 Explained

The newest episode of the MCU series WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany in the lead roles, is labeled All-New Halloween Spooktacular. The sitcom world of Westview, now seems more like a Malcolm in the Middle story, where Wanda and Vision have to haggle with their new houseguest, amid Vision’s own growing skepticism about what’s going on.

WandaVision released its first seasonal special in this week’s episode, which also picks up on the outcome of episode five’s massive Cinematic-Universe-bending twist. Pietro (Wanda’s brother) is alive! And the role is played by Evan Peters!

The sixth episode of WandaVision further illustrates how different it is from anything else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So far, the show has been bizarre, crazy, terrific, and engaging. We already know all is not well in Westview. Vision, too, is fighting existential questions about himself and the town, and no longer trusts Wanda. It’s Halloween, and the twins and Wanda’s brother Pietro are suitably adorned in gaudy outfits.

Interestingly, both Wanda and Vision are dressed as the classic versions of their characters.

We get no clue as to how Pietro has a different face. From the beginning, Pietro plays the role of the feckless, bad-influence uncle, leading the kids astray as they go trick-or-treating. But later, he discloses he’s only doing that because he knows that’s the part Wanda wants him to play.

Unusually, he seems fairly knowledgeable of the simulation they’re in and how Wanda is controlling it, and is also explicitly illustrated as the MCU Pietro/Quicksilver, complete with recollections of his death in Age of Ultron, which was also shown in a quick clip during the recap.

As Billy explains to the camera, not only is “Mom” being weird right now, but she and Vision “aren’t fighting… they’re just different.” This is obviously because Vision is at this point aware that something very weird is going on.

Vision leaves, saying he has night duty. Pietro manages to keep Wanda diverted while Vision finally sets off on his own, looking for the truth. Vision basically heads for the edge of town, observing on his way the increasingly limited movement of the citizens—who, if only based on the one tear streaming down a woman’s cheek as she repeats the same gesture over and over again, are not in a great place.

This simulation is certainly buggy along the borders. Even Wanda’s powers have limits. The people at the border just stay still like statues, even if dressed colorfully.

Meanwhile, at S.W.O.R.D.’s base, Darcy figures out that Tyler is tracing Vision’s movements within the barrier (and that he has a secret plan connected to Vision, called “Cataract”) and wants to do more digging. Monica, though, is anxious to get back inside Westview.

“I know what Wanda’s feeling and I won’t stop until I help her,” she says, even after Darcy warns her that after two trips through the barrier, her cells are being amended. “It’s changing you.”

Tyler orders the arrest of Monica Rambeau (Teyohan Parris), Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) because Monica does not agree with Tyler’s ways.

The trio puts up a fight against their captors and again enters the facility to find out what Tyler is up to. They soon discover he knows more than he is letting on.

Darcy stays behind while Monica and Jimmy head off to meet a contact, who should be able to help Monica get back inside the barrier (very likely another exciting MCU cameo). However, Darcy gets caught.

Inside Westview, Vision locates Agnes driving a car near the edge of the town and confronts her. He breaks her out of Wanda’s mind control, and she discloses he is dead. Vision pays no attention and tries to escape the wall of Westview, only to begin dismantling himself. It turns out that he can stay alive only inside Westview.

Cautioned by her son Billy, since both twins are developing abilities similar to Wanda and Pietro, Wanda realizes Vision is in trouble. She freezes everyone around her and widens the Hex, protecting Vision while simultaneously converting the S.W.O.R.D. agents into carnival workers.

Hayward and a few of his people escape in an SUV. Though it’s not clear whether or not Monica and Jimmy also avoided the barrier or got caught in it. Wanda’s eyes return from flashing red to normal. The episode ends at a cliffhanger.

With just three episodes remaining it’s difficult to guess precisely what turn will this series take. Were Tommy and Billy essentially narrating this week’s episode, or was that just more Malcolm in the Middle fun?  Is there a significance to Pietro looking like the Fox Quicksilver, or was Aaron Taylor-Johnson just busy making Tenet?

The episode also features a commercial break for “Yo Magic, the snack for survivors” ( which is highly unsettling). It illustrates a boy starving on a small desert island when a shark offers him a magical yoghurt, the boy is unable to open it and ages rapidly leaving only the skeleton behind (similar to the “He chose poorly scene” of Indiana Jones the last crusade).
