With every new episode, Disney’s wacky new Marvel show WandaVision keeps getting better and better. Centered on Wanda Maximoff, the show finds her in a self-simulated reality whose each day is themed after a new decade of the sitcom era and where she lives an ideal suburban life with her husband, Vision. In Episode 5, we are given our first glimpse into the dark side of Wanda’s harmless game of playing house.
Wanda is abusing her magical powers to keep her dead lover alive. But he seems to be catching on about Westview’s truth with some help from S.W.O.R.D. agent Dr. Darcy and Wanda’s weakening concentration. However, the biggest kick in Episode 5 came to be the cameo by X-Men‘s Quicksilver, especially since the character’s Marvel counterpart was Wanda’s now-dead brother, Pietro.
Quicksilver’s entry at a time when Wanda was just about to crack and reveal the truth about Westview’s twisted reality was most apprehensive. The surprised look on Wanda’s face at the unexpected visitor was further confusing. Did she not ask for Quicksilver to visit her as a distraction for Vision, just like every other guest until now? If Wanda did not invite him, then who did? How did he manage to travel from the X-Men universe to the Marvel universe?
Episode 5 gave us a lot of answers but even more questions.
1. WandaVision Episode 5 Ending Explained
Fans are furiously debating theories about Evan Peters’ Quicksilver landing in Westview. What does that mean for the upcoming episodes of WandaVision and the upcoming movies of the MCU? Here are the biggest theories.
1.1 Because it is the ’80s
WandaVision has been consistently dropping Pietro-special Easter eggs, what with Wanda delivering twins and reminiscing her twin brother. So, when Quicksilver does appear at the end of Episode 5, it makes no sense that it is not Pietro from Avengers: Endgame, but Quicksilver from the X-Men movies.
One of the first explanations for this casting anomaly was that the X-Men Quicksilver was active in the ’80s, where Episode 5 is set. By this logic, as time passes in Wanda’s sitcom world, Quicksilver will change his appearance and turn into the Marvel Quicksilver, aka Pietro.
This will obviously mean that WandaVision will explain how a dead man will return to Wanda’s reality. However, that seems highly unlikely, now that Wanda has been seen consoling her twins after Sparky’s death, saying death cannot be fixed.
1.2 Because X-Men‘s Pietro is alive
This suggests that Wanda did try to bring back Pietro, but since his dead body was not available for resurrection (as Vision’s was), she ended up inviting the only alive Quicksilver. This theory completely ignores Wanda’s surprise on seeing Quicksilver at her door. When he claims to be her brother, she recognizes that it is not Pietro but someone else.
Through the episode, Wanda has been very confident about her guests because she had wanted them to come in. But her shell-shocked face is proof that everything is still not as it seems. Mabe Wanda is not responsible for it all, and someone else is invested here as well.
1.3 Quicksilver is Really Mephisto
That brings us to the next plausible theory that the Quicksilver cameo is really not a cameo but a fake reveal. According to this theory, Quicksilver is actually Mephisto, Marvel’s version of the Devil, and is here to stop Wanda from spilling the beans to Vision.
This theory builds upon the older proposition that Wanda is being manipulated by the Devil into creating the mutants Wiccan and Speed. In fact, the twin boys are growing up too fast and are already in colors worn by the mutant superheroes.
This theory may not be true because it refutes WandaVision‘s rumored premise of introducing the Marvel Multiverse. If the X-Men Quicksilver did not travel from his universe to the Marvel universe, then the series will have to set up another course for inter-universe travel.
2. What Does Wanda Do to Westview’s Boundary?
In Episode 5, Wanda walks out of Westview, enraged after having discovered the ’80s S.W.O.R.D. drone, which was sent to find her. She is dressed in her Wanda outfit and speaking in her Sokovian accent. But she is there to warn the S.W.O.R.D. against interfering in “her life.”
Before leaving, Wanda seems to have cast a spell on the energy field surrounding Westview, turning it red. What exactly does she do to the boundary? Does that mean it is no longer fluid, and no drone or human can enter it without Wanda’s permission again?
3. Vision’s catching on about Westview’s truth
In Episode 5, Wanda has been especially callous about hiding her superpowers from the townsfolk. When Agnes comes into the house to help Wanda and Vision put the twins to sleep, the twins age five years, but Agnes does not seem to notice. In fact, she sprays a mysterious lavender oil on them, which may have caused them to age so quickly.
Wanda even uses her magic in front of Agnes to create a collar for their pet, Sparky. Later in the episode, when confronted by Vision as to why she was not more careful, she says she does not want to hide from others anymore. A weird thing to say, considering they are two superpowered beings trying to pass as a normal couple in a suburban town.
When Wanda sends Vision away to the office to distract him, he ends up receiving Dr. Darcy’s secret correspondence. Vision hears the words Westview Anomaly for the first time. He also realizes how much pain every townsfolk were in due to Wanda’s control of their minds.
In the last scene, Vision seems about to get Wanda to tell the truth about what was outside Westview. But just then, they are interrupted again, this time by the X-Men Quicksilver.
4. Who is Really Behind Westview? Is there a New Villain?
As usual, the episode packed its biggest reveals in the last couple of minutes. Wanda and Vision are in the middle of a major confrontation where Vision is upset about not having any memory beyond Westview. He confesses to even being a little afraid of everything. He then asks her why there were no children in Westview, and she responds, “I don’t control everything that goes on in this town.”
A weird thing to say considering “it’s all Wanda”, right? She seems ready to crack when Wanda says she does not remember how all of this started. Is she telling the truth or is she lying? We did see her storm into the S.W.O.R.D. office to steal Vision’s body. How does she no longer know how it all started?
But if we are to believe her and her surprise at seeing Quicksilver at the door, then maybe something bigger is really going on here. Maybe Wanda is being manipulated with the greed of living a happy married life with her beloved, Vision. That brings us back to the theory of Mephisto, the Devil. That could also explain Quicksilver’s surprise visit as a reason to distract both Wanda and Vision from their ongoing conversation.
But if that is not the case, then Wanda is sure to be one of the biggest supervillains of the MCU.
5. Easter Eggs
Finally, it is time for the latest set of Easter eggs in WandaVision‘s Episode 5. The first one has to be Wanda and Vision’s new dog, Sparky. The name refers to an actual dog’s name owned by Vision in the comics The Vision. In the comics, there are also the bushes called Azalea bushes in the show, the poisonous shrubs that kill Sparky.
The second one is the hexagonal shape of Wanda’s alternate reality. It seems the shape was hexagonal for no other reason, but so Darcy can call it “The Hex”, about the comics once again, and it symbolizes Wanda’s ability to cast a spell on others, a hex.
