Who’s Geraldine/Monica in ‘WandaVision’?

The fourth episode of WandaVision has finally revealed the true identity of Wanda and Vision’s mysterious ‘homeless’ neighbor Geraldine (Teyonah Parris). We now know that Westview is a creation of Wanda’s mind, and anybody who tries to bring her back to reality will be thrown out, just like Geraldine. Episode 4 explains why.

Most of the fourth episode was set outside of Wanda’s power-generated alternate dimension. Among a host of other things, we learn why Geraldine is quite different from other residents of Westview. It seems Geraldine could be the key to Wanda’s near-perfect sitcom reality falling apart in the upcoming episodes. So, who is she?

1. Who is Geraldine, really?

We knew from before the show’s premiere that Teyonah Parris was playing Monica Rambeau in WandaVision. So, when she was introduced to Wanda as Geraldine in episode 2, we knew Geraldine’s story arc was an Easter egg in the making.

Geraldine is really Monica Rambeau, an older character from the MCU who was blipped out in Avengers: Infinity War.

2. Who is Monica Rambeau?

Monica was last seen in Captain Marvel as the bright-eyed daughter of Maria Rambeau, founder of the secretive government agency SWORD.

Parris had earlier mentioned that WandaVision would pick up right after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and episode 4 delivers on that. It takes us back in time to Thanos’ snap, which caused half the population of Earth to disappear, including Monica Rambeau.

She was brought back with the others by Iron Man’s self-sacrificing snap. Three weeks later, she resumed her duties at SWORD.

3. Why is Monica Rambeau on WandaVision?

As a SWORD agent, Monica is asked to assist the FBI to investigate the “missing town’s case”, aka the Westview case. Monica joins FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) in solving the mystery of Westview, a town that nobody seems to remember.

When Monica resumes her duties in the SWORD office, nothing is the same anymore. It has been five years since she went missing and three years since her mother passed away. SWORD has a new director, and Monica has a new role.

She has been “grounded” by her mother, which means she can only take up terrestrial projects. Her first case is a missing persons’ case, originally an FBI investigation being handled by Jimmy Woo.

Jimmy introduces her to the town of Westview, whose residents have been missing for a few days. The whole town seems to be missing because anyone associated with it is having a “convenient amnesia” about it.

Monica then sends a SWORD drone helicopter to investigate Westview, which disappears into thin air. She then walks towards the town herself and comes across an energy field of some sort. As soon as she touches Westview’s force field, Monica’s face lights up, and she is zapped right in.

In Wanda’s world, she appears in episode 2, pretending to be just another Westview resident. However, her mysterious presence in the town does not go unnoticed by everyone. Wanda’s neighbor, Agnes, is wary of Geraldine/Monica because she does not have a house in Westview.

By the end of the third episode, Wanda zaps Geraldine/Monica right back to where she came from. What remains a mystery is whether Monica has any special powers that allowed her to enter Wanda’s sitcom reality in the first place. Does anyone who comes in contact with Westview’s mysterious energy field get sucked in automatically? (There is, of course, the case of the beekeeper—Agent Patrick—who manages to enter through the sewers but is kicked out as soon as Wanda lays eyes on him.)

4. Does Monica have superpowers?

Monica Rambeau becomes the second Captain Marvel in the comics when she receives a burst of extradimensional energy that gives her superpowers. She later adopts the alias of Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum, and is an important ally of the Avengers and other superhero teams.

Monica is capable of absorbing electromagnetic energy, channeling it into energy blasts, and converting her body into any form of electromagnetic energy for traveling purposes.

Since Teyonah Parris is likely to reprise her role from Captain Marvel in WandaVision, we can expect a lot more action from her in the upcoming episodes.

5. Will Monica go back to Westview?

The decision to send Monica back to Westview will depend on how successful SWORD will be in breaching Wanda’s magical boundaries. If they can manage to breach it, which seems difficult after the episode 5 teaser, that gives viewers a glimpse of several failed attempts, then Monica may not need to return.  But if they fail, then maybe Monica will have to find a way around Wanda’s anger for her and re-enter Westview.

The episode 5 teaser has a different surprise. Vision himself is seen trying to leave Westview’s boundaries and starts to dismantle in the process. But if that were to happen, maybe Monica plays a role in reaching out to Vision to tell him the truth about Westview. So far, Wanda has managed to keep Vision in the dark, apparently to keep him and her dream of having a happy family alive.
