WandaVision Easter Eggs Explained

WandaVision was easily one of the most anticipated Marvel TV series with its unique plot and the burning question: How the heck is Vision alive? (And what the heck is going on?) Long before the series even premiered.

WandaVision episodes are filled with Easter eggs from the MCU. There were references to Hydra, Strucker, the Grim Reaper, and even the Stark company in the episodes. Some of the references are so subtle that you might miss them if you didn’t watch it with hawk-eyes.

But if you’ve missed some of them, look no further. I will talk about some of the Easter eggs that were dropped (oh-so-subtly) in the premiere episodes of WandaVision.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from WandaVision.

1. The Avengers #238: The August 23 Mark

In episode 1, it was noted that August 23 was marked on a calendar in Vision residence. The date was supposed to mark when Vision’s boss and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, were coming home for dinner.

August 23 references The Avengers #238 comic series, a critical comic issue in which Vision gets reactivated after getting deactivated in an adventure; because of him phasing through an unknown magical energy field.

This might have been included in the show to warn us that everything that is happening in the WandaVision universe is set in a similar energy field, which might mean that Vision will probably not be “active” if he phased outside of the bubble.

2. Stark Industries: Toaster

While the homage to Stark Industries in an advertisement of a revolutionary new toaster is evident, there is a deeper meaning behind the reference than just that. It might do us good to remember that “Stark” equates to “trauma” in Wanda’s life.

Back when Sokovia, Wanda’s native, was war locked, the house of 10-year-old Wanda was bombed by Mortar fire. Wanda and her brother had to lie in the rubble for two days at a tender age, staring at an unexploded bomb that lay merely three feet away from the siblings.

The bombshell bore the logo of “Stark Industries,” which led them to their dislike of the Avengers because of their involvement with Tony Stark/Iron Man.

3. The supposedly “Traditional Sokovian Greeting”

What Vision called a “Traditional Sokovian greeting” to laugh it off when Wanda covered Mr. Hart’s eyes might seem funny at first, but there is a much deeper, darker meaning behind it.

It is a reference from the Avengers: Age of Ultron film, where Scarlet Witch attacks the Avengers by holding their heads and taking control of their minds.

4. The Strucker Watch References

Episode 2 had another advertisement, which featured a Strucker watch. And much like the Stark industries, “Strucker” also equates “trauma and suffering” in Wanda’s life.

Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker was the leader of Hydra, who had experimented on Wanda and her brother Pietro with a Mind stone, which (kind of) gave them their powers. Linking their connection to Hydra, the logo is visible on the watch too.

The experiment process was too painful for them to bear, which explains why Wanda links Strucker with trauma and suffering.

5. House of M: Reference on Wine Bottle

In episode 1, Wanda serves glasses of wine labeled “Maison du Mépris,” in which the ‘M’ is pretty distinctive, and it is inferred to be ‘House of M’ reference.

It is a significant event in the comics where Wanda’s mind snapped, which led to Wanda rewriting the reality (much of what she is doing now).

“Maison du Mépris” literally translates to “House of Misery” (linking it to the House of M comic event, suggesting that much like in House of M, Wanda’s mind has snapped because of her suffering (she lost too many people).

6. S.W.O.R.D References

S.W.O.R.D. is a space organization that monitors alien activity and protects the earth from external threats. They’ve been given an acronym of “Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division,” for their debut in MCU with WandaVision.

Their logo looks like a sword piercing through a circle, which was seen twice in the series.

I. The Toy Helicopter

Wanda finds a toy helicopter in her shrub garden, brightly colored in red and yellow in her greyscale world. The colors would have been linked to Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit if it weren’t for the S.W.O.R.D. Logo on the side.

The possibility of it being a real helicopter is supported by the series trailer, in which we see a helicopter flying towards a giant red orb (which is most likely the reality that Wanda has wrapped herself in.

II. Wanda and Vision Being Monitored by S.W.O.R.D.

Episode 1 ends with a revelation that shows us that Westview is being monitored (in technicolor surroundings at that) on a screen, with the S.W.O.R.D. Logo in the background.

As to the question of why they are monitoring the superhero couple, it is yet a mystery. There have been other instances where they have tried to reach Wanda out, but she still chose to remain ignorant of their attempts.

One was when someone started calling Wanda out from a malfunctioning radio, saying, “Wanda, who is doing this to you?” We have a good reason to believe that a S.W.O.R.D Agent is trying to reach her out.

7. The Grim Reaper: Bewitched Theme Opening Credit

In the Bewitched inspired intro of episode 2, precisely at 3:27, when Vision is phasing through his roof, we see a helmet in a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment in the Crawlspace below the Vision Residence.

The helmet strongly resembled the one worn by the Grim Reaper from the comic series. It might be a clue about his appearance in the future episodes of the series. It is still unclear what he will be doing in the Wanda-verse, but the hints are too obvious to ignore.

8. Swarm: The Beekeeper From the Pothole

At the end of episode 2, a man in a hazmat suit (or a bee suit?) Is seen crawling out of the drain hole, surrounded by bees. The man has a terrifying aura around him. When Wanda sees him, she mumbles “No” and resets reality. But the bee-man is likely to appear again.

If the comics were to be believed, the bee-man might as well be Swarm, the Spider-verse villain. He was eaten alive by the mutant bees, ultimately transferring his consciousness into the bees and hence became capable of controlling the bees.

The episodes were filled with symbolism and references which were pretty interesting to find and learn about. The next episode will air on Disney+ Hotstar on January 22, 2021.
