The splendid series finale of WandaVision was perhaps the perfect way to set up MCU Phase 4, and if you stuck around like the classic Marvel fan you are, you know what happened in the end-credit and post-credit scenes.
While Doctor Strange may have not made it into the final episode of WandaVision as the ultimate savior, hints were certainly dropped about the Sorcerer Supreme.
1. Wandavision Drops a Hint for the Sorcerer Supreme
If you’ve been following the MCU Phase 4 news, you’re aware that WandaVision was made to set up Wanda’s arc in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As such, since we also know that the Time Stone is no longer there to assist Doctor Strange as his greatest weapon, we can’t say how powerful he might be at this point.
While Marvel fans have long been debating who the strongest Avenger is, the latest guess being Doctor Strange, WandaVision has clearly altered that possibility.
The series finale revealed just how powerful Wanda Maximoff is, proving that she in fact surpasses Doctor Strange in an incredible fashion. Remember that WandaVision is a precursor to the next Doctor Strange movie, and there will not be a season 2.
2. The Unveiling of the Scarlet Witch by Agatha Harkness
Fans may have expected Doctor Strange to show up during the finale of WandaVision, but Wanda herself proved to be quite independent, thereby squashing all theories of who is more powerful. Even though Doctor Strange did not appear in the final episode, the antagonist Agatha Harkness did mention the Sorcerer Supreme.
At the end when Agatha is defeated and Wanda reveals her true Scarlet Witch form, Agatha reveals that Wanda is now “more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme.” This clears all doubt about who the most powerful Avenger is, but it also foreshadows that Scarlet Witch is “the harbinger of chaos” as we hear Agatha’s old coven say.
3. The Book of the Damned
During the revelations behind Wanda’s transformation into the Scarlet Witch, we find out a lot more about who Scarlet Witch really is and where she comes from. Agatha even says that Wanda is destined to destroy the world and that there is an entire chapter dedicated to the Scarlet Witch in the Darkhold i.e. The Book of the Damned.
If you stuck around till the post-credits scene, you must have seen Wanda sitting outside a cabin in the mountains somewhere in complete isolation.
You’d think she was just there sipping tea that her kettle had just announced was ready. But the camera then pans further into the cabin in a separate room, where we see a suspended-in-mid-air Scarlet Witch reading the Darkhold, speedily going through the chapter dedicated to her.
4. Is Wanda Maximoff No Longer a Mutant?
Marvel has altered the Scarlet Witch’s origin story several times, thereby giving her several backstories.
Although we have known her as a mutant so far, Wanda is not just a mutant anymore, going back to her magical origins as shown in WandaVision to be the chaotic being in the Multiverse of Madness.
According to the Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary about what the mind stone did to her,
“Whether [the Mind Stone] altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside Wanda, the Infinity Stone on Loki’s scepter bestowed incredible powers of the mind.”
Marvel Studio Visual Dictionary
As such, MCU has now clarified through WandaVision that Wanda has completely transformed into her magical self as Scarlet Witch. So she is now a sorceress and not a mutant.
5. What is Scarlet Witch’s Part in Doctor Strange?
Now that we’ve established how powerful Wanda is, having completely transformed into the Scarlet Witch, it’s even more intriguing to see that the Scarlet Witch was already existing outside of Wanda through astral projection!
So, what part is Wanda going to be playing in Doctor Strange? Moreover, the astral projected Scarlet Witch also hears the voices of Wanda’s kids, at which point the show ends. So does The Hex still exist? Will it be addressed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?
6. The Sorcerer Supreme and the Scarlet Witch
The magical being who defends the earth against threats is known as the Sorcerer Supreme, the title currently held by Doctor Stephen Strange. Moreover, we know Wanda is going to be a vital character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the post-credits scene, Wanda was astral projecting as the Scarlet Witch, exactly like Doctor Strange used to do before he became the Sorcerer Supreme.
Now, what does this mean for both Doctor Strange and Wanda in the next movie? Given how much power Wanda is currently capable of wielding, we wouldn’t be surprised if she gave Doctor Strange a run for his money. So, if the Scarlet Witch really is the harbinger of chaos, she might either be an adversary of Doctor Strange or join hands with him. And all we can do is wait to find out which one.
Tell us your theories in the comments!
