The Walking Dead fans, it’s time to gear up! The zombie thriller drama is all set to return for Season 11!
Season 11 is supposed to be the final chapter of the AMC fan-favorite The Walking Dead. So here’s to one last attack unleashed by the zombies.
Looking back at its legacy, we can all say that the show kept us hooked and entertained for over a decade. The series has drawn more than a million viewers for years and the end of this series is an end of an era, at least for me.
Fans are speculating several plot lines for the final season, out of which the most intriguing one is the possible return of Rick Grimes.
The series began with a group of survivors in post-apocalyptic Atlanta (and later other locations) fighting zombie attacks. This team was led by none other than Rick Grimes, which makes him so significant to the story.
According to showrunner Angela Kang, the final season will be “bigger than ever.” I personally don’t doubt the statement at all.
Here’s everything we know about The Walking Dead Season 11 as of now.
1. The Walking Dead Season 11 Release Date
The final season will be released in the form of a trilogy.
This means that Season 11 will be released in three parts of eight episodes each. The first part will premiere on August 22, 2021. The second part is expected to premiere this winter or early 2022. The third batch should premiere in mid-2022.
We expect that the episodes of Season 11 will premiere on AMC Plus a few days before airing on television. This is what we have seen for most AMC series.
2. The Walking Dead Season 11 Trailer
On July 15, a new trailer for Season 11 was released, titled “Trilogy”.
The beginning is super gripping—it begins with Rick Grimes giving his iconic speech about life and death.
This is followed by a series of glimpses of various characters who were significant over the seasons such as Herschel, Andrea, Negan, Morgan, and Daryl.
“This is how we survive. We tell ourselves we are the walking dead.” Rick Grimes’ voice declares in the background. Towards the end, a title card says “The Beginning of the End”.
The trailer is more of a nostalgic trip down memory lane than actually providing new footage but it is a really beautiful video, especially for the fans.
This is the final season of a decade-long series and the fandom has been connected to this over the years. So more than new footage, I think the nature of the trailer appeals to and claims to understand the emotions of the multitudes of fans.
Additionally, in April, when AMC made the announcement for the release date, they’d also dropped the first teaser of Season 11.
The teaser began with the voice of Eugene asking questions. Along with them, there were flashes of a graffiti-laden subway station, a courtroom, and even ice cream.
There is also an important shot of a red armor, which belongs to Mercer, a character from the comics, played by Michael James Shaw, whose appearance is confirmed for Season 11. He is featured in the latest poster as well.
3. The Walking Dead Season 11 Cast
The cast will be led by Norman Reedus as Daryl, Lauren Cohan as Maggie, Melisa McBride as Carol, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan.
There are several veteran members of the cast who are all set to return for the final season. They include Josh McDermitt as Eugene, Seth Gilliam who plays Gabriel, Paola Lazaro as Princess, Christian Serratos playing Rosita, and Cooper Andrews as Jerry.
Michael James Shaw is all set to join the Season 11 cast as Mercer. According to The Walking Dead comics, Mercer is a Commonwealth soldier and wears red armor. He also has a relationship with the Princess.
In the teaser, he made an appearance in his iconic red armor as well.
4. The Walking Dead Season 11 Posters
AMC has been running “11 Weeks of Reveals until Season 11” for The Walking Dead where every week they drop something new related to Season 11 until its release.
As a part of this, AMC dropped a brand-new poster of Season 11. The poster looks smashing and features several familiar faces such as Daryl (played by Norman Reedus), Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan), Carol (played by Melissa McBride), and Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
The poster also features Michael James Shaw as Mercer, who is joining the Season 11 cast.
5. Return of Rick Grimes in Season 11 and Spin-off Movies
Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes is hands down one of the most iconic (if not THE most iconic) characters of the show.
The show has always featured a dynamic cast. Characters died by the hands of zombies and other humans and other major characters were introduced. But Rick’s departure after nine seasons was the biggest in The Walking Dead’s history.
So, his return in Season 11 is the most anticipated one in the history of television. Period.
After Rick Grimes’ departure after nine seasons, AMC announced that three spin-off movies were on the cards which will explain Rick’s fate after his so-called death. Yes, he is that popular!
Lincoln has recently spoken to SFX Magazine about his return to the universe.
With regard to the movies featuring Rick, Lincoln said “I’m not filming at the moment. I’m still very much in lockdown. We’re very excited about how, at the first available opportunity, we’re going to go into production—there’s talk of it being spring. I can’t wait to get those cowboy boots.”
Pretty soon we will get to know if the cowboy boots are returning in Season 11!
6. The Walking Dead Season 11 Episodes
Season 11 will consist of 24 episodes, making it the longest season of The Walking Dead. As I mentioned earlier, they will be released in the form of a trilogy. Each part will have eight episodes.
The final season is loosely based on the TWD Comics Volume 30: New World Order, Volume 31: The Rotten Core, and Volume 32: Rest In Peace.
The titles of the episodes of Season 11 Part 1 have been revealed as follows:
Episode 1: “Acheron: Part I”
Episode 2: “Acheron: Part 2”
Episode 3: “Hunted”
Episode 4: “Rendition”
Episode 5: “Out of the Ashes”
Episode 6: “On the Inside”
Episode 7: “Promises Broken”
Episode 8: “For Blood”
7. About The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a neo-western horror drama that is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman. It currently stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and others.
Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy, wakes up from a coma to find that the world has just gone through a zombie apocalypse. He soon realizes that the world is divided into the zombies- the ‘walkers’- and a group of survivors who will do anything to survive.
The recent season, that is season 11, will adapt material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and focuses on the group’s encounter with the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.
