Violent Night writer Josh Miller recently reacted to beating Die Hard on the Christmas video-on-demand charts.
The movie casts Stranger Things’ star David Harbour as Santa Claus as he visits a wealthy household to deliver presents to young Trudy.
Things quickly take a turn for the worst as Santa finds himself witnessing a hostage situation. He must shed his sugary ambiance and save the family before things get out of hand.
A few weeks after making its theatrical debut, the Christmas thriller came to premium VOD platforms just before Christmas. It was quick to gallop its way up the ranks and managed to topple the classic Die Hard as the most in-demand video just before Christmas.
Writer Josh Miller took to Twitter to react to this unexpected and surreal happening. This is what he had to say.
Will Violent Night be the next big Christmas classic?
Die-hard fans of the franchise will know that Die Hard had a topsy-turvy run when it first hit the theaters. Critics judged it as being too violent and nitpicked Bruce Willis’s performance as John McClane.
The audience has mixed opinions regarding its tag as a ‘Christmas movie’. While some say that the film’s theme doesn’t go with the mood of the holiday season, others note that it’s Christmas setting, and the music make it qualified to be called a Christmas classic.
Violent Night has had a much better start at the box office than Die Hard, and it can be on its path to becoming the next Christmas classic for those who want something different.
The movie is a perfect juxtaposition of hand-to-hand combat like the ones from John Wick and dark humor like Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody a Winner. The critics have praised this versatility, and Violent Night has dodged the criticism of not taking a unique concept far enough.
Moreover, it did reasonably well at the box office and earned $63 million against a production cost of $20 million. Thus, we have no reason to think it won’t topple other Christmas classics to be the next big thing during this time of the year!
With Violent Night receiving so much appreciation from fans and critics alike, all eyes are now on its sequel.
Producer Kelly McCormick has revealed that production could start as early as January 2023, while writers Casey and Miller have said that they wish to write “a lot of sequels” for the franchise. The sequels will likely explore Santa’s workshop and the North Pole.
Though Universal hasn’t given any statement regarding a sequel, a Violent Night movie seems to be the next big thing to look forward to every Christmas!
