Thorfinn explores what it means to be empty inside in episode 8 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “An Empty Man.”

As the wheat farm grows spectacularly under Einar’s care and expertise, their lives look more cheerful. However, Thorfinn’s dreams are getting more and more disturbing as he tries and looks within himself and realizes his purpose.

The jealousy of the retainers leads to them taking apart the wheat farm and denying all blame; an angry Einar does not let it slide and lets them know straight to their face. Not even the pacifist Thorfinn can stand by watching.

Einar is getting beat up by all the retainers as Thorfinn lies on the ground and will likely finally remember the memory he has forgotten all this while. It has something to do with Thors and may present a clue to finding Vinland.

Once he remembers what it is, he will finally have a purpose and no longer be this empty inside and depressed all the time. Most likely, he will not join the fight, and they will be severely injured however, but the retainers will likely be punished for it too.

3. Recap of Episode 8:

The start of the episode introduces us to yet another traumatic dream of Thorfinn, where a younger version of him enters the burning house of Einar with hostile intentions, and it quickly switches to him trying desperately to climb a cliff.

Corpses fill the walls, and he screams as he falls and eventually wakes up to Einar sitting around. He spoke of his father and Askeladd in his dream, and Einar asked who it was.

With the help of the horses, they continue plowing the farm, and the other retainers realize that once Einar comes to the farm, the wheat will grow much better. Thorfinn finally tells Einar who Askeladd is and gives a glimpse of his story.

Thorfinn feels he has forgotten something much more critical than Askeladd, something he should never forget. He remembers Askeladd’s last words and realizes he no longer hates him. The lack of hatred leaves him empty since that was his entire purpose.

The old master takes them out to the beach and shows them how to catch a fish using a net, and they try to grasp the technique given the setting sun. The master offers Thorfinn some advice, feeling empty is good in the way that you can rebuild yourself.

Thorfinn is constantly lost in thought. As he walks through the woods with Einar, he tries and cheers him up. He tells him that people can change and that he feels like he’s becoming a better person.

They come across the field wholly destroyed and all the wheat torn apart. Einar realizes that this was done by the retainers and immediately walks with the intent to kill, blinded by rage, and continues marching.

Thorfinn tries to stop him, and Einar says that they deserve to die for what they’ve done and that he should be angry too. However, as someone who has plundered and destroyed his entire life, Thorfinn does not have the right to be angry.

Pater helps them out and says he was faced with a lot of bullying when he was enslaved, and Einar and Thorfinn have a quiet walk back home. Einar is frustrated with this life they lead, and they cross paths with the retainers.

Thorfinn tries and restrains him, but Einar faces them head-on and confronts them to his face, and he attacks him, but Thorfinn holds him back. Einar breaks free and goes to punch him, but Thorfinn attacks him before he can move.

The other retainers join in and try to fight. Still, they outnumber him and begin beating Einar up as Thorfinn lies on the ground and starts remembering memories of his past, flashes of his father, and the dream of falling down the cliff again.
